Wrapping up our May birthday’s with Dually, our oldest horse! He turns 28 today!✨

Did you know that horses can live into their 30’s?! So while he is old, it’s not uncommon for them to reach this age.

Dually has been with me for almost 12 years, so way before I started doing equine assisted therapy. Even though I did not choose him for his ability to be a therapy horse originally, he has fallen into his roll quite well! He has participated in several groups and loves to greet clients when they come into the barn, especially to see if they have any snacks. Snacks are his favorite😉 He is sassy and isn’t afraid to let you know what he wants, when he wants it. I think that’s a lesson we can all learn from him sometimes.

Some of his favorite things are peppermints, alfalfa, oranges, cheezitz, coffee and his best friend Rudy!

Everyone help me in wishing Dually a happy birthday and many more to come!💙

It is always an honor and privilege to host the veterans group from Mental Health Association! We explored the obstacles we face and the different phases of life that shape who we are. Through connection with Tucker and Dually, we reflected on resilience, growth, transition, and the strength it takes to keep moving forward even when the path feels uncertain.

The horses have a unique way of helping us slow down, stay present, and recognize the barriers we carry while also reminding us of our ability to overcome them. It was a powerful day of honesty, support, and shared understanding among fellow veterans.

Grateful for the healing, insight, and connection that comes from this work. 🐴🇺🇸

It is with the heaviest heart I share the passing of our beloved Odin🩵 He crossed the rainbow bridge last weekend surrounded by everyone that loved him in the place where he helped heal so much pain.

Odin is the reason the equine portion of SPW exists at all. We met almost 4 years ago when he was owned by another agency and that is where our work together began. I knew he was special from the very moment I met him. He was our “steady eddy” and was amazing at going with the flow.

About 6 months after I made the decision to move on from my position at that agency, I was offered the opportunity to own him myself. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, but I knew I would figure it out. As a direct result, I started renting the location we are at today! It is because of this move, and Odin, that I am able to incorporate equine assisted psychotherapy into my sessions.

Odin was everything you could want in a therapy horse. He was flexible, attuned, intuitive, patient and confident. He had an uncanny ability to highlight what clients needed to see on any given day. Sometimes he was a mirror, other times he was grounding and made clients feel seen. He was truly a gift and there is an enormous hole in so many hearts with his loss, including mine.

Ody, rest in peace sweet boy. You are so loved and so missed!🩵

If you have any memories or ways that Odin touched your life, please feel free to leave them in the comments or PM me. I love hearing about them!

Second up for our May birthdays is baby Chase! Today, he turns 4 years old!

Did you know that horses are not finished growing until they are about 6-7 years old?! So this guy still has a few years left until he’s fully mature!

We are so grateful to have him here at SPW. He is definitely a fan favorite. He is the first one to greet you and is always up for getting some lovin and scratches from the humans. Chase is gentle, kind and is a fantastic addition to the program!

Happy Birthday Chasey! We love you!❤️

Kicking off our May birthday’s is Baby Kasey! He turned 6 on May 2nd🥰

Kasey is a BLM Mustang who, we believe, was born in the holding pens which means he was never ‘wild’. However, it surprises people to hear that he is a mustang when they meet him because he loves people. We describe him as a golden retriever puppy in a horse body. He is the first in his herd to greet you and wants to be wherever the humans are.. as close as humanly possible😆 Some of his favorite things include unzipping jackets and playing with people’s jewelry. Oh, and snacks!

Happy 6th Birthday Baby Kasey!🩶

Today we had the pleasure of helping an awesome local Girl Scout troop earn part of their horse badge! They learned about all things horses: safety, anatomy, how to groom, tack, their different gaits, how to lead them and more! It was a little cold but the girls left with smiles on their faces! After a very long winter, the horses were happy to be back to their work☺️

Please reach out if you have any interest in scheduling a group event! Spring and fall are the best times!

‼️ We will not be holding any equine sessions until this artic blast leaves which may be here for well over a week😅

HOWEVER, my office is still nice and toasty😉

Fun fact: Horses generate body heat from eating mainly through digestion and metabolism. When a horse eats, its body breaks down feed to release energy. A large part of this happens in the hindgut, where microbes ferment fibrous feeds like hay. This fermentation process produces heat as a byproduct, helping warm the horse from the inside. They have their own internal furnace! Our horses have access to 24/7 hay, fresh unfrozen water and are blanketed/inside as needed to help get them through this cold snap.

Hope everyone stays safe and stays warm!

Happy New Year everyone!✨

While I have very much been slacking on sharing about this, our food drive is still going on! So far we have collected about 5 bags of non-perishables which will be donated to The Grateful Shed in Frankford!

If anyone would like to donate, please be sure to get me your items within the next week however, I am more than happy to drop them off at a later date.

Thank you everyone who has supported this cause through either food or monetary donations! No amount is too small!🤍
