June is Hernia Awareness Month, an important time to raise awareness about one of the most common conditions treated in general surgery.

Hernias occur when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. They can develop over time or appear suddenly and may cause discomfort, pain, or a visible bulge - though some people may have few or no symptoms at first.

At Union General Surgical Associates, we encourage early evaluation and treatment. When left untreated, hernias can worsen and potentially lead to serious complications. The good news is that with timely diagnosis and today’s surgical options, most hernias can be treated effectively with excellent outcomes.

Common signs of a hernia may include:
• A noticeable bulge in the abdomen or groin
• Pain or pressure, especially when lifting, coughing, or bending
• Discomfort that improves when lying down
