What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in one or more joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Symptoms often begin in the smaller joints and may progress to larger joints over time.

Common Types of Arthritis

• Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It typically develops as people age, when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones gradually wears down. This “wear and tear” process leads to pain, swelling, and decreased joint movement.

• Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. In this condition, the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints, causing inflammation, damage to cartilage, and eventually bone erosion. RA can affect multiple joints and often occurs symmetrically (e.g., both hands or both knees).

Common Symptoms of Arthritis

• Joint pain
• Joint stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of rest
• Swelling around the joint
• Reduced range of motion
• Warmth or tenderness in the affected area

When to Seek Care

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above or suspect you may have arthritis, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic providers. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms, improve mobility, and prevent long term joint damage.
