Here’s what I find on the HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) of almost every postpartum woman who is struggling:
Elevated copper flooding the postpartum brain, directly disrupting domaine and norepinephrine metabolism. This is NOT a serotonin problem, this is a copper problem. Most women are prescribed an SSRI only for it to make their symptoms worse… this is why.
The calcium shell — a mineral pattern where high calcium walls off the emotions and creates numbness, disconnection, dissociation, and an inability to feel joy even when you know you should.
Low potassium which means thyroid hormone cannot activate at the cellular level. Functionally low thyroid can mean low serotonin production, low dopamine sensitivity, and a nervous system with no minerals left to function optimally.
Gut dysbiosis, because birth, antibiotics, stress, sleep deprivation, and blue light wreck the microbiome. Plus, your gut produces 90% of your serotonin.
Do I believe in the postpartum mental health crisis? Absolutely. But we have to recognize it for what it really is: a mineral and neurological crisis with a mental health presentation.
The HTMA test is a simple at-home hair sample. No needles, no lab visit. It is the first lab I run on all of my postpartum clients before anything else.
