Scoliosis Awareness Month is recognized throughout June to help increase understanding of scoliosis, encourage early detection, and support children and families affected by spinal curvature disorders.
Scoliosis most commonly develops during the rapid growth years of adolescence, typically between ages 10 and 15. Because early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes, this is an important time to raise awareness and educate families about the signs to watch for.
At Union General Pediatrics, we are committed to helping children stay healthy through every stage of growth and development. Regular well-child visits and sports physicals provide valuable opportunities to screen for scoliosis and identify concerns early.
Signs parents should watch for include:
• Uneven shoulders
• One shoulder blade that sticks out more than the other
• Uneven hips or waistline
• Leaning to one side
• Clothing that hangs unevenly
If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your child’s growth and development, talk with your pediatrician. Early detection and intervention can help children achieve the best possible outcomes.
