Sound Tip: "PH" says /f/

Did you know? The letters "PH" work together to make the /f/ sound!

⭐ Examples:

Phone
Photo
Dolphin
Elephant
Alphabet
Fun Ways to Practice:

📸 Go on a photo hunt and name the pictures you take.

🐬 Read a book and listen for words like dolphin and elephant.

📱 Play "I Spy" with PH words:
"I spy something that starts with the /f/ sound... phone!"

Parent Tip:

When practicing, remind your child that even though they see the letters P and H, they should use their "f" sound by gently placing their top teeth on their bottom lip and blowing air out.

💡 The more children hear and use PH words in everyday conversations, the more comfortable they become recognizing this spelling pattern!

💡 DID YOU KNOW? 💡

🗣️ Did you know that everyday conversations are one of the best ways to build speech and language skills?

Whether you're at the grocery store, on a walk, or enjoying a summer outing, talking with your child about what they see, hear, and experience helps strengthen:
✨ Vocabulary
✨ Listening skills
✨ Sentence formation
✨ Social communication

Try asking open-ended questions like:
🌞 "What was your favorite part of today?"
🍦 "How do you think ice cream is made?"
🏖️ "What would you build if you had an unlimited amount of sand?"

The best part? No special materials are needed—just meaningful conversations!

❤️ Small moments can make a big difference in communication growth.

✨ Speech Tips and Tricks ✨

The “-ed” ending is an important part of language development because it helps children talk about things that happened in the past. Many children may leave off this ending, saying “I play outside” instead of “I played outside.”

A simple way to practice at home is to ask your child about their day using questions like, “What did you play?”, “What did you watch?”, or “Who did you help?” Encourage them to answer in complete sentences and listen for those clear “-ed” endings.

Just a few minutes of practice during everyday conversations can help strengthen speech, grammar, and communication skills! 💙🧡

June is Aphasia Awareness Month!

Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects a person's ability to speak, understand language, read, or write. It is most often caused by a stroke or brain injury and impacts millions of individuals and their families.

At Driskell Speech Services, we are passionate about helping individuals with aphasia regain confidence, improve communication skills, and reconnect with the people and activities they love. Through personalized speech therapy, support, and encouragement, meaningful progress is possible.

This month, we encourage everyone to learn more about aphasia, spread awareness, and support those living with communication challenges.

Together, we can help give every voice the opportunity to be heard.

💙 SLP Appreciation Week — Day 5 💙
✨ “Being an SLP/SLPA means…”

Being an SLP or SLPA means so much more than speech therapy sessions and data sheets. It means helping others find their voice, building confidence, creating connections, celebrating tiny victories, and showing up every day with patience, creativity, and heart. ✨

It means meeting children where they are, advocating for communication, cheering on progress that others may overlook, and making meaningful impacts in the lives of families every single day.

It also means flexible schedules, lots of snacks, therapy games everywhere, bubbles in your bag, and getting attached to every kid you work with. 💙

At the heart of it all, being an SLP/SLPA means believing every person deserves to communicate, be heard, and feel understood.

💙 SLP Appreciation Week — Day 4 💙
✨ “What advice would you give parents supporting speech at home?”

Supporting communication at home doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the best language learning happens during everyday moments — while playing, reading, driving, eating dinner, or getting ready for bed.

Our team’s biggest advice?
✔️ Keep it fun
✔️ Stay consistent
✔️ Model language naturally
✔️ Celebrate small wins
✔️ Don’t strive for perfection

Children learn best through connection, conversation, play, and routines. Simple interactions throughout the day can make a huge impact on communication growth over time. 💙

💙 SLP Appreciation Week — Day 3 💙

😂 Speech therapy sessions are filled with growth, connection… and LOTS of unexpected laughs!

From funny misunderstandings to brutally honest kid comments, our students keep us smiling every single day. Whether it’s articulation mix-ups, wild explanations, or age guesses that hurt just a little 😅, there’s never a dull moment in speech therapy.

One of the best parts of this job is the joy and humor our students bring into every session. We wouldn’t trade it for anything! 💙

💙 SLP Appreciation Week — Day 2 💙
✨ “What are your favorite things to use in speech therapy?”

Every SLP and SLPA has favorite tools that bring sessions to life, encourage communication, and make learning FUN!

From books and bubbles to puppets and games, these tools help create meaningful moments, laughter, and growth every single day. 💙
