Meet Erin. ❤️

Erin was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a complex craniofacial condition that affected the development of both sides of her lower jaw.

Two weeks ago, she underwent a major step in her reconstructive journey: bilateral mandibular reconstruction using two vascularized fibula free flaps.

Using microsurgery, bone from each fibula was carefully shaped to reconstruct her right and left mandible, restoring the foundation of her lower face and jaw.

Today, just 2 weeks after surgery, Erin is back for her postoperative visit — healing beautifully and doing very well.

This type of reconstruction is not simply about replacing missing bone. It is about creating a stable facial framework, improving symmetry and function, and building a foundation for the next stages of reconstruction.

Erin still has a journey ahead, but seeing her doing so well only two weeks after such a major operation is incredibly rewarding.

One patient.
Two fibula free flaps.
A completely reconstructed mandible.
And another major step forward. ❤️

Happy patient. Beautiful reconstruction. A new chapter. ❤️

Bilateral implant removal followed by bilateral DIEP flap breast reconstruction using her own tissue — with breast resensation through nerve reconstruction.

The goal goes beyond rebuilding breast shape. Whenever possible, we also work toward restoring sensation and creating a breast that looks, feels, and behaves more naturally.

Implants OUT.
Own tissue IN.
Resensation added.

So happy to see her doing well and enjoying her results.

What a journey. ❤️🇭🇺🇺🇸

Several years ago, the Detroit Free Press shared the story of a brave 9-year-old girl from Hungary named Aliz.

She had already survived leukemia twice, chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant. Then a devastating fungal infection destroyed her nose and parts of her upper lip, palate, and face.

Her family traveled thousands of miles to Michigan looking for hope.

Through multiple complex operations—including microsurgical free-flap reconstruction—we began rebuilding her nose and upper lip.

Today, years later, Aliz returned to Michigan for another revision. And now we say farewell once again as she heads home to Hungary. ❤️

Seeing how far she has come is difficult to put into words.

This is why we do reconstructive surgery. We don’t simply rebuild anatomy. We help give people back pieces of their lives.

It has been one of the great privileges of my career to be part of Aliz’s journey.

Safe travels home, Aliz. 🇭🇺❤️

It was such a privilege to sit down with Nicole and hear her perspective on her breast reconstruction journey.

After a nipple-sparing mastectomy, she underwent direct-to-implant breast reconstruction with direct re-sensation, reconnecting sensory nerves to help restore sensation to the breast skin.

Her surgery went beautifully, and I’m incredibly grateful for her trust and for her willingness to share her experience.

Thank you, Nicole, for allowing me to be part of your journey. ❤️
