Did you know that Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase sensitivity to summer heat?
Common SSRIs include Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, Celexa, Paxil, Luvox, and Viibryd.
Because SSRIs affect serotonin signaling, they can influence the body's temperature regulation and sweating mechanisms, making it harder for some people to stay cool in hot weather.
To stay safe during the summer:
☀️ Hydrate frequently
☀️ Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
☀️ Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, breathable clothing
☀️ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day
☀️ Seek shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible
☀️ Store medications according to label instructions, typically in a cool, dry place
Important: Continue taking your medication as prescribed, and talk with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about heat sensitivity. Never stop an SSRI abruptly without medical guidance.
