Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective over-the-counter ingredients for treating acne—it helps kill acne-causing bacteria, reduces inflammation, and can prevent new breakouts. But did you know that how you store it and when you use it can impact how well it works?

To get the full benefit from your benzoyl peroxide products:
✔️ Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Excessive heat and humidity can cause the active ingredient to break down faster.
✔️ Keep the cap tightly closed to minimize exposure to air.
✔️ Always check the expiration date. Over time, benzoyl peroxide loses its potency, meaning an expired product may not be as effective at clearing acne.

If your acne treatment doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to, don't assume your skin has "gotten used to it"—check the expiration date first!

Using fresh, properly stored products helps ensure you're getting the acne-fighting power you paid for.

There is a dangerous trend happening, especially amongst Gen Z: Tanmaxxing is an internet trend that comes from the broader “-maxxing” culture (like looksmaxxing, gymmaxxing, etc.), where people try to optimize a specific aspect of their appearance. Tanmaxxing specifically means trying to maximize how tan your skin becomes, often by deliberately seeking strong UV exposure.

This can involve monitoring the UV index and tanning when it's highest, and spending long periods in direct sunlight while using tanning oils, and/or avoiding sunscreen. It can also include tanning beds.

It is very popular on social media, promoting deep tans as helping to look leaner or more defined, having a healthy glow, and enhancing muscle definition. Of course, we are extremely opposed to tanmaxxing because a tan is fundamentally a response to UV-induced skin damage. Excessive UV exposure increases skin cancer risk (including melanoma), sunburns and long-term skin damage, premature aging/wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, and sunspots/pigmentation changes.

A healthy tan can be achieved with self tanners without UV exposure. Tanmaxxing is risky and unhealthy.

You may have read that the FDA has officially approved bemotrizinol, adding it to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients for the first time in the agency's history under the streamlined process established by the CARES Act. It's the first new active ingredient added to the OTC sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s.

It's a chemical sunscreen that offers slightly better protection against UV-A than other chemical sunscreens. It's also more stable than most other chemical sunscreens and doesn't appear to absorb into the skin. That's the good news.

HOWEVER...the level of long wave UV-A protection is weaker than that provided by Zinc oxide in combination with Iron oxides. So if the goal is to prevent wrinkles and lighten hyperpigmentation (both caused by long wave UV-A exposure), people are better protected by Zinc oxide, which is the active ingredient in the Pennoyer MD Skin Science sunscreens. Bemotrizinol can also sting the eyes if it runs. Lastly, it's not exactly transparent on application. and leaves a slightly visible crystalline film on the skin surface.
It also really weakens after about 370 nanometers (nm), and 370-400 nm UV penetrates the deepest. For keeping the skin young looking, which requires better protection in the 370-400 nm range, Zinc oxide remains the very best.

🌿 Poison Ivy, Oak & Sumac Season Is Here! 🌿

These plants contain urushiol, an oily resin that can trigger an itchy, red, blistering rash known as allergic contact dermatitis.

Know what to look for:
• Poison ivy & poison oak: typically have 3 leaflets ("Leaves of three, let it be!")
• Poison sumac: 7–13 leaflets and often grows in wet, swampy areas

⚠️ Symptoms usually appear 24–72 hours after exposure and may include:
✔️ Intense itching
✔️ Redness
✔️ Blisters
✔️ Linear or streaky rash patterns

Prevention tips:
• Wear long sleeves, pants, and gloves when outdoors
• Learn to identify these plants before hiking or gardening
• Wash skin, clothing, and gear promptly after potential exposure

Myth alert: Poison ivy rashes are NOT contagious. However, urushiol oil can remain on clothing, tools, and pet fur and cause new exposures.

Seek medical care if the rash is widespread, involves the face or ge****ls, causes significant swelling, or affects breathing or swallowing.

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors!
