On Monday, June 1, Cora Emmons and Ella Smith were awarded the Dr. R. Kent Moseman Scholarship in a public ceremony in the chapel at IU Health's Bloomington hospital.

Awarded to students pursuing a career in healthcare, the scholarship was presented by Jonathan W. Surdam, MD and Toni Moseman.

Both recipients plan to pursue a career in nursing; Smith hopes to work in pediatrics, while Emmons wishes to become a nurse practitioner.

"Nurses are the grease behind the machine, and bring the caring spirit to healthcare," says Moseman.

After experiencing severe bleeding from radiation damage, Phillip Jerrell began hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Bloomington.

The treatment stopped his symptoms and supported steady improvements in his overall strength.

“When I started (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) I was at a low point and within five weeks of treatment my bleeding had completely stopped,” he says. “It didn’t slow down, it completely stopped and it hasn’t started up again. Each day when I came out of treatment I could tell I was just a little bit stronger.”

He credits not just the therapy, but the people who guided him through it.

“I didn’t only change physically, but I think I mentally changed, that was probably as much healing for me as anything else and these people did it. Their warmth was half my healing,” Jerrell says. “They were like my angels.”

Each year, IU Health physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, and volunteers dedicate their time to serve the local community.

This May, IU Health hosted its annual spring sports physical event at local area high schools, ensuring 520 student-athletes from Edgewood High School, Owen Valley High School, Bloomington High School South and Bloomington High School North received essential exams for athletic participation.

“We're really fortunate to have such a solid resource like IU Health as a part of our team,” said Andy Hodson, athletic director at Bloomington HS North. “The fact that they volunteer their time and expertise for our student athletes is a huge win for our community. ”

IU Health is honored to be able to support young athletes, and strengthen community ties, through initiatives like these. Thank you to all who made this possible!

Congratulations to BEE Award winner Samantha Fox, MAII, with our IU Health Bloomington Cardiology team!

Her Being Excellent Everyday (BEE) Award nominator says, “Samantha is great with patients and providers; she is reliable and brings a calming presence no matter where she is. She works hard when she is in the clinic, offering help wherever she is needed.”

That includes going to the Bedford outreach office to keep things running smoothly for the providers who come to that location.

Samantha shares, “Being a Medical Assistant is very rewarding for me. I am always happy to jump in and help co-workers with anything they need help with when I am able to. I treat our patients and their loved ones as if they were one of my loved ones.”

She’s a big proponent of Medical Assistants growing in their roles and being a good team player. Samantha also emphasizes the importance of showing empathy and compassion to patients, even when they may be difficult.

After all, “we never know what is going on in other people’s lives.”
