A clinical study investigated how multimodal emotional stimuli—specifically olfactory (smell), auditory (sound), and visual cues—impact students’ creative thinking, using EEG brainwave analysis as a measure.
One key finding was that students exposed to rosemary EO (olfactory stimulation) showed increased α1 brainwave synchronization, associated with enhanced internal attention and creative cognition. When additional stimuli like personalized verbal praise and visual rewards were layered in, beta wave activity (linked to cognitive engagement) also increased significantly.
Rosemary EO was diffused from an ultrasonic diffuser—6 drops in 100 mL of distilled water—that was activated 20 minutes prior to participant’s arrival and operated continuously, consistently outperformed the control group across challenging tasks in both creativity scores and brainwave patterns. These results suggest that rosemary EO, as part of a carefully designed multimodal sensory environment, can boost cognitive flexibility, focus, and creative output, providing valuable insights for brain-targeted educational strategies.
