For Ildikó Krencz, MD, PhD, LAM first entered her life through the laboratory.

In 2015, while beginning her PhD focused on lung neoplasms, Ildiko was also working in the laboratory of Professor Anna Sebestyén, where researchers were investigating the mTOR pathway. That same year, sirolimus was approved by the FDA to treat LAM. The connection was natural, and Ildiko soon began exploring LAM and the biology behind this rare lung disease.

What began as a research interest has grown into more than a decade of work dedicated to understanding LAM, and into a deep connection with the people who make up the LAM community.

October may be nearly over, but It's not too late to start your laps or help us reach our 2026 goal!

Whether you walk, run, row, bike or swim, you can take your laps wherever you are, whenever it works for you. Set a goal, rally your friends and family, and help us reach our $18,000 fundraising goal.

A goal of 180 laps is encouraged in honor of the average number of laps Peggy has completed each year. And with a suggested donation of just $1 per lap, every lap will make a difference.

Not ready to take laps? You can still be part of the tradition by making a donation to support The LAM Foundation and the women and families who depend on our community.

Meet Genice Sarcedo-Magruder, new LAM Liaison, for Region 20 in Southern California. Genice is a long time California with roots throughout the state. Diagnosed in 2024, she continues to build on her LAM knowledge while embracing the support and connection of the LAM community. As a LAM liaison, she hopes to offer the same wonderful support given to her in the early, overwhelming days of diagnosis, and she looks forward to connecting with others in her region.

The LAM Foundation is deeply grateful for the commitment of our LAM Liaisons like Genice who provide communities of care for women with LAM. LAM Liaisons are a listening ear, a source of empathy, and facilitators of resources and support for women navigating the unique challenges of this disease.

For Dr. Rosa Estrada-Y-Martin, caring for people living with LAM is about much more than treating a rare lung disease. It is about listening, building trust, sharing knowledge, and helping patients navigate decisions that can change their lives.

A board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonologist and professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, Dr. Estrada-Y-Martin has been the LAM Clinic Director since 2015 and has become a trusted resource for patients and colleagues across the LAM community.

“Medicine is a vocation, not a career,” she says. “Since I was 6, I always knew that I wanted to be a physician.”

What a wonderful weekend of connection and learning for LAM patients in Northern California!
Patients came together to share time, build connections, and learn more about topics including LAM and hormone replacement, exercise, and fatigue.
A big thank-you to LAM Liaison Susan Jacobs and LAM Clinic Director Dr. Stephen Ruoss for their warm hospitality and for sharing their time and expertise with the group. We’re so grateful for the LAM community and the connections that make us stronger together.
