As your metabolism begins to slow down one of the main things you might experience is weight gain. This is even more so common with people who have hypothyroidism as they have lower levels of thyroid hormones.
However, there are still several ways that you can support your metabolism even with hypothyroidism and it starts with:
☑️𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩: you want to ensure that all of your thyroid levels are not just within range, but are within 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 to support your health and wellness goals. You can assess your thyroid health by testing the following thyroid lab markers: T𝘚𝘏, 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘛𝟺, 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘛𝟹, 𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘛𝟹
☑️𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 & 𝘌𝘹𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘦: even if you are unable to get to the gym every single day (𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡, 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝), it is important to still get some movement in. When it comes to exercise, both cardio and strength training can increase metabolism. Strength training allows you to build lean muscle, which in turn helps you burn more calories, even at rest.
☑️𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘴/𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘩 𝘋𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨: skipping meals or going on very low calorie diets is another 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 of low metabolism. If you have been skipping meals and noticing a decrease in energy along with weight gain or weight plateau, consider increasing your caloric intake to restore metabolism.
☑️𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯: out of all of your macronutrients, proteins require more energy to be used to be broken down and digested. So, as you are eating a lean protein meal, your body is actually burning calories while doing so, win-win!
☑️𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵: getting less than 6 hours of sleep can reduce your metabolic rate.
Picking 1 or 2 of these suggestions and sticking with them for 3-4 weeks can help shift your metabolism in the right direction. As with anything, patience is always going to be a part of the journey, but with time you will start to see the changes.
