Gut feelings earn their name from the place in the body where they make themselves known. A pang in your gut when you may be doing the wrong thing, or a vibrant zing when your body approves can guide you reliably at times when logic fails. Sometimes, we ignore our gut and live to regret it, understanding later that a rational approach is only one way of determining what is going on in a situation and how we should react.

Our gut resides in the neighborhood of our solar plexus and the third chakra just above your belly button. When it is functioning well, we can trust its guidance and adjust our actions accordingly. It is in this place that we find the courage to act, to reach out into the world, and to create change. When our power center is out of balance, we are timid and out of sync, wishing we had said something we were only able to phrase later when we were alone, or wishing we had acted on an opportunity we didn’t see until it was past.

In order to utilize your power center, you may want to focus your attention on it more regularly and make time to care for it. You can begin right now by taking a deep breath into your belly. On the exhale, pull your navel in toward your spine so as to empty out completely before taking another deep breath into your belly. When you empty completely, you release stagnant energy and create more space to be filled with fresh, nourishing breath. The more you practice this simple, cleansing exercise, the more clear and communicative your gut feelings will be and the more comfortable you will feel acting on them.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped bring attention to the importance of mental wellness this May.

Mental health is not just something we focus on for one month—it is part of our daily lives, our relationships, our work, and our overall well-being. Whether you took a step toward self-care, reached out for support, checked in on a loved one, or simply learned more about mental health, those actions matter.

As a counselor and counselor educator, I am continually inspired by the courage, resilience, and growth I witness in the people I serve. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, and progress isn’t always linear, but every step forward is meaningful.

As we move into June, let’s continue to normalize conversations about mental health, reduce stigma, practice compassion, and remember that seeking support is a sign of strength.

Take care of your mind, nurture your spirit, and be gentle with yourself.

💚 With gratitude,
Dr. Angie Anderson

Many of us have a pretty good understanding of our stressors and the things that have happened in our lives that have felt traumatic. And often, we’ve tried different solutions — therapy, reading books, reflective journaling, or talking things out with a friend. But sometimes, even after we “do the work,” the relief we’re hoping for still doesn’t come.

When this happens, please know it’s not your fault. Anytime we go through something that deeply hurts us, it doesn’t just create painful memories. It can leave an imprint on your nervous system, shaping the way your body reacts and responds to the world around you. That’s why trying to think our way through it can only take us so far. For many of us, the missing piece isn’t more analysis. It’s learning how to cultivate a felt sense of security and calm from within.

Somatic healing offers a unique and empowering path forward — one that doesn't force you to revisit your worst memories. Instead, it helps your body remember what safety feels like. Through gentle body-based practices and guided breathwork, you can begin to re-regulate your nervous system, break free from the patterns keeping you stuck, and enjoy greater health, happiness, and fulfillment.

When we feel stuck in our lives, it’s important to take stock of what is going on and find out if there is something we are doing or not doing that is keeping us stuck. Sometimes the situation is out of our control, and we need to look within to find the patience to wait until things move forward again. Many times, though, we can find the source of our stagnation in our own hearts and minds. We may be clinging to old ideas about reality and need to make adjustments that will bring us back in tune with life, so we can flow again. Or we may find that fear of change is what’s keeping us stuck, and we can resolve to look for ways to face that fear.

If introspection does not provide the answers we need, it can be helpful to ask those around you if they notice anything obvious that you might not be able to see. Ask someone you can trust, so they will be kind and sensitive, as well as honest. Try to let go of your resistance and listen with an open mind, and remember that you are always the final judge of what you need.

In all this, be kind to yourself and know that we all get stuck sometimes. Think of it as a part of your process, a necessary step on your journey, rather than as a problem that shouldn’t be happening. This can help keep your frustration at bay and give you the space you need to take a deep breath and really figure out what’s going on.

We all experience periods where we feel separated from the loving ebb and flow of the universe. These times of feeling disconnected from the source may occur for many reasons, but self-sabotage is the most common. We purposefully, though often unconsciously, cut ourselves off from the flow of the universe and from the embrace of humanity, so we can avoid dealing with painful issues, shun the necessary steps for growth, or prevent the success that we are afraid of achieving. When you choose to disconnect from the source, you block the flow of the universe’s energy from passing through you. You become like a sleepwalker who is not fully awake to life. Then your hopes, plans, and dreams begin to appear as distant blurs on a faraway horizon. Universal support never leaves you, so you can choose to reconnect whenever you are ready.

Reconnecting with the universe grounds you and is as easy as you making a concerted effort to become interested in the activities you love or responding to what nurtures or stimulates you. You also may want to make a list of the activities and kinds of experiences that touch your soul. One of the easiest ways to reconnect is simply by stating the intention of doing so.

When you disconnect from the universe, your sense of purpose, creativity, and ability to be innovative are not as easy to access. You also may experience a deep sense of longing or feel devoid of ideas or unworthy of love. It’s important, however, to recognize that being disconnected from the universe is never a permanent state. When you are connected, all aspects of your being will feel alive as the flow of the universe pours through your being and into your life.
