Be honest. You have money saved up, but you're not emotionally ready to retire. A recent study by the Financial Planning Association backs this up.

While more than half of financial planners think their clients are financially prepared for retirement, only 11% think they are emotionally prepared. Yikes.

I'm not surprised. I work with executives, dentists, and family offices struggling with retirement, and most are afraid.

How will I keep busy?
Will I be bored?
Will I rot away?
Will I be lonely?
Will I drive my spouse crazy being home all day?

Another question you should ask, but may not have thought of:
Will I be healthy enough in 5, 10, 15 years to do all the stuff I want to do?

I talk about retirement a lot. A natural question most folks ask is: Can money buy happiness? Well... Famous researchers Matthew A. Killingsworth and Daniel Kahneman found that more money doesn't make an unhappy person happy. In other words, you can't buy happiness if you're unhappy now.

However, money can boost happiness if you're already happy.

In my professional medical opinion, three of the main drivers of happiness are money, health, and genuine relationships.

Think about it. If you're weak, frail, or in pain, you're probably not going to be jumping for joy, even if you have a private plane. Having the biggest mansion in town ain't gonna bring a smile to your face if you're all alone.

As we think about retirement planning, let's zoom our focus out from money and consider the health and lifestyle ingredients for a blissful next chapter.

What do business executives, military commanders, and anesthesiologists all have in common? They must make high-stakes decisions in stressful environments while battling cognitive overload.

Given our brain's limited ability to juggle multiple pieces of short-term memory simultaneously, extra data can cause mental short-circuits and lead to poor decision-making.

Now, AI is (literally) entering the conversation. As a computer, AI is better than humans at managing and synthesizing multiple data streams. In fact, I've given several talks on this exact process at military conferences, including a recent one with the Army Cyber Command.

The point, as I see it, is that AI should make it easier for human decision-makers by compiling data, creating summaries, and REDUCING COMPLEXITY.

Unfortunately, many companies are doing the opposite. There was a recent WSJ article (link in comments) about how many businesses are encouraging their employees to use public Slack channels explicitly so their AI tools can read their messages.

The problem?

By the company's own admission, this will cause irrelevant junk messages (from the human employee's perspective) to overwhelm the public Slack channels. That's good for AI, but bad for people. Policies like these increase cognitive overload and complexity and reduce humans' decision-making ability, all in the name of feeding the AI system.
