Movement benefits!

This National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, consider this your reminder to move in ways that make your body and brain feel good.

Exercise is one of the closest things we have to a wonder drug — and the science backs it up. 💪🧠

Regular physical activity can:
• Reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke
• Lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes and some cancers
• Improve sleep, memory, mood, and energy levels
• Help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
• Strengthen bones, muscles, and the immune system

Here’s the kicker: adults only need about 150 minutes of moderate activity per week — that’s roughly 30 minutes, 5 days a week — to see major health benefits.

And no, it doesn’t have to be intense. Walking, biking, dancing, hiking, frolicking, gardening, and strength training all count.

Every bit of movement matters. 🚶‍♀️✨

Did you know there are several simple ways to help lower your risk of stroke later in life?

Recent studies highlight 3 important factors:

• A healthy diet — with extra emphasis on getting enough protein to help slow age-related muscle loss
• Strength training and regular physical activity — especially building good habits before adulthood
• A faster walking pace — your walking speed and stride can actually reflect overall health and longevity

At our clinic, our physical therapists can evaluate your walking pattern, observe your stride, and help you make adjustments to improve your gait efficiency and movement quality.

Small changes now can make a big difference for your long-term health. 🧡

Is your back hurting? Over 75% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and most people don't know why it’s happening...

It’s easy to know why your back is hurting after an injury. Daily, mundane activities are what sneak up on us and cause major back pain.

If you’re experiencing back pain but are unsure why, take a look at this list and see if anything sounds familiar…

•Grocery Shopping• 🛒
The lifting, twisting, pulling, and reaching that we do in our local grocery stores can actually take a toll. Over time, these routine movements can put stress and strain on the spine and the connecting muscles. Heavy grocery bags can put pressure on the back as well.

•Office Work• 💻
Sitting at desks in front of monitors is the new normal for a busy workday. You may have heard how office work strains our necks and eyes, but lower backs can also get out of whack from bad desk posture. Without enough lumbar support, when you don't keep your head square above your shoulders, your back can be under a lot of stress from holding up a position it’s not built to hold.

•Gardening & Lawn Care• 🌹
Another sneaky source of wear and tear. When gardeners lean over and pull weeds, till the soil, or dig holes for planting, all of these activities can put strain on the back. If we lean over while gardening, dig hundreds of holes for bulbs, or push ourselves to finish our weeding before it gets too hot… you can see how quickly back strain can happen.

•Driving• 🚙
This is another situation where a daily activity can slowly do harm to our backs. Not all car seats are created equal… and not all backs fit in all car seats. If your car seat is pushing your spine out of line, or you find yourself sitting and driving for long distances on a regular basis… you might be in store for some serious back pain down the road.

•Cleaning• 🧹
Similar to other physically demanding jobs, cleaning our homes can mean lots of bending, twisting, reaching, pulling, lifting, and overall strain. If you don’t have enough support for your back, or you clean with bad posture, then the same wear and tear a construction worker feels over time can happen to you, too.

•Working Out• 💪
Fitness is key to a healthy lifestyle. However, there are certain activities that, if done wrong, can hurt our backs more than not. If you’re doing tons of overhead lifting in the gym, twisting on the golf course, jumping and landing on basketball courts, or feeling lots of consistent impact from running, you might be slowly hurting your back without even realizing it. These activities can be beneficial when done correctly, but very harmful if done incorrectly. Bad form during exercise is a major source of back pain.

•Sitting Still• 🪑
On the flip side, not doing enough exercise can cause pain. Our bodies need regular movement to maintain a healthy balance. Without strong core muscles or enough blood flow, our spine doesn’t get the steady support or refreshing oxygen it needs throughout the day. This can lead to strain, deterioration, and lots of back pain over time.

Unfortunately, most of the activities listed are simply unavoidable in a healthy, balanced life. While these things can hurt your back… they shouldn’t. Back pain can be relieved naturally with the right plan of care.

If you’re interested in how to move forward in your daily life, pain-free with a strong, healthy back call us or make an appointment online today! We’d love to offer you a one-on-one appointment… that way our team can determine why these everyday activities are hurting you.
