Allow me to introduce you to Lloyd Kahn — a most fantastic role model and inspiration.

Lloyd is 91 and has been skateboarding since he was in his 60s. If you have 20 minutes, watch or listen to this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VHEEQ9G-G0) and soak up all his wisdom around body movement, fun, and taking care of yourself. I fell in love with him.

I've recently taken up skateboarding and am learning how to do it in my 40s (which is wild! and scary! and fun!), and so (of course) I've been checking out skateboarding videos, and Lloyd is one of the ways the algorithms really delivered.

If you don't have the 20 minutes to check out the video, Lloyd basically talks about how continuously learning new things, not letting age dictate what you do, moving your body, and eating good food help him maintain an awesome and quality life. And damn — he has it spot on. He does bite-sized movements, makes them fun, grows a lot of his own food, and keeps his mind and life active.

That's a magic recipe.

In the constant see-sawing back and forth between overstimulation and numbing out we experience, mental and energetic balance is so beyond necessary that the word important doesn't even begin to describe it. We need play and fun and ways to engage our whole beings that make us feel alive and craving more.

It's so easy when we feel drained to potato it on the couch and scroll, and today I'm going to invite you to fight that urge just once to give it a try. Instead of that, get up and find something fun to physically do. Maybe your fun is jumping jacks or dancing silly or cleaning out a cabinet or walking around the block. Whatever it is, do it for just a few minutes. Make it accessible instead of dreadful. Don't let that executive dysfunction get you down.

And then see how you feel afterwards. You still might be tired, but you are likely going to be a different kind of tired. A kind where maybe you grin because you feel a little joy. A little more rejuvenated on your insides. And if you do, show up and do it again. And again. And again.

I promise it makes a huge difference in your presence of mind and heart.

And, as an added bonus if you dig movies like me, for those times when you really only can lay flat for rest, check out a feel good movie recommended Lloyd to lift your spirits (https://lloydkahn.substack.com/p/lloyds-list-for-a-lift). This is a solid list with some treasures on it. If you dig that and want to check out more good words from Lloyd, peep his Substack (https://lloydkahn.substack.com/).

Until next time, dumplings — with all the good energy ✨

Today I'm geeking out about extracellular matrix — specifically how this network scaffolds our whole bodies together and creates a reciprocal relationship between body movement and healthy cells. (Bodies are the coolest!)

My brain is on fire 🔥

We often give big systems big credit, which they've earned — our muscles help move us, our bones support us, and our ligaments keep our bones attached to each other so we move as a whole unit. They have the big reputations and they're what we're most acutely aware of when we can't move or have discomfort or injury.

AND.

They're not nearly the whole story.

As you move, the extracellular matrix gets super stimulated and sends all these cool ass signals to your itsy bitsy cells so they can do the internal work they need to do to stay healthy. Your individual cells! Your beautiful, lovely, and microscopic building blocks.

This is a big reason why movement can help us heal from a lot of injuries faster, why a stagnant lifestyle can keep us sick longer, and why we just feel good after we've moved around.

AND.

No surprise here — healthy cells make a healthy body.

All that good stuff going on in your cells then helps shine you up from inside out — your circulation improves, you get faster and stronger, you gain endurance, you lose a little of that brain fog.

Talk about win-win.

We also still need balance. We need the healthy stress of movement and we need recuperative rest, which is all the more reason to do what you can and recognize healthy boundaries for yourself.

So move how you can, light up those cells, and have a most remarkable day :)

I've been doing a lot of work migrating my website to a new host, and that's meant rebuilding much of it. It's felt like a giant undertaking, and I'm happy to say that I've been able to bring it back online (check it out here: https://zenfulmindings.com/).

One thing I kept in mind while I was working on it is that I just needed to get it to the 'good enough' stage — where it felt genuine and whole, even though it still could use some refinement (and maybe a little extra pizzazz!). The big deal here is that the refinement isn't the vital part. What's important is that it genuinely and accurately conveys my message, vibe, and services so that you (and whoever else heads there) can get a feel for what it's like to work with me.

And that doesn't require crazy amounts of refinement. Plus I just don't thrive when I'm get stuck trying to get every last detail perfect — I would never have been able to bring my new site online or even send this letter. And I very much bring that same approach with me to my yoga practices.

We spent a good bit of time in my yoga teacher training talking through how to cue refinements, in what order, and how they can be helpful, but I had a really hard time connecting with the idea that refinements are always necessary. While I think there is value in knowing those things for exploration purposes, no two bodies are truly the same. We have so many differences that an attitude of universal refinement inhibits us being and showing up exactly how we are.

Our edges are all different. Our bone structure, different. Daily energy, different. Strength level and muscle tension, different. It's so important to remember because that's how we disarm comparison culture and all the self-imposed shame and insecurity that it breeds.

My whole vibe with yoga is simply to create containers where you can experience your own body in that specific moment in time. Because how much of your life have you been denied (and denied yourself) the experience of your own body? How much do you really know about it? How deeply can you tap into your internal experience with a sense of confidence and undiluted curiosity?

You deserve to intimately get to know yourself wholly with a tender heart and sense of understanding, and trying to snap too many details into place can get in the way and overwhelm your process. If you start slow and practice with patience, you give yourself the opportunity to really sink into your experience and allow it to unfold. Then later, when your body is ready, you can choose to integrate supportive, personalized refinements. And that's a good recipe for longevity, healthy movement, and general awesomeness 💫
