At Gutterman’s and Gutterman Warheit, we’ll listen carefully to determine your needs, so that we can help you put together a memorial service that properly pays respect to your loved one.

A memorial service looks very much like a funeral. In most instances, the only difference is that the decedent is not present. We’ll work with you and your rabbi, if appropriate, to put together the service, helping you find poems, traditional prayers and other remembrances to honor your loved one. We also help arrange memorial services with non-religious officiators. We can hold the memorial service in one of our chapels, at your synagogue, or at a location of your choice.

What Is Shiva?
In the Jewish faith, after the death of a loved one, it’s customary for certain family members to participate in ritual periods of mourning that may last anywhere from a week to a year. The first such tradition, which begins immediately after the burial ceremony, is called the shiva.

For many of us, access to clean and drinkable water is part and parcel of our everyday life. Did you know, though, that one of every four persons on the planet does not have ready access to fresh and clean water. Scientific evidence shows that the planet has become drier over the past quarter of a century, with more incidence of drought, severely limiting access to fresh water in many parts of the world. Much of the fresh water that gets used in the world comes from rivers, streams and lakes, but those resources are limited.

Growing Blue Agave in the Negev
How Tequila Production Made Its Way to Israel

Tequila, the spirit derived from the sap of the agave cactus, first saw large scale production in Mexico in the mid-to-late 15th century, as soldiers and explorers from Spain (known as “conquistadors”) discovered the local brew and partnered with local distillers to make the liquor available commercially. Though there’s no evidence that Jewish merchants or entrepreneurs were involved in the initial creation of a commercial market for tequila, there is substantial evidence that Jewish businessmen were integral to the explosion of the tequila market in the 20th century.
