When parents hear “speech therapy,” they often think about helping their child talk. But communication is so much more than spoken words.

For an autistic child, pediatric speech therapy can support different ways to communicate, through words, gestures, pictures, or other communication tools.

It can also help with everyday communication, like expressing wants and needs, understanding others, interacting, playing, and finding ways to say “no,” “help,” or “I need a break.”

The goal isn’t to change who your child is. It’s to help them communicate in a way that works for them.

Sometimes, a child knows exactly what they want to say, but saying it clearly can be difficult.

One possible reason can be Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), a speech disorder that affects how the brain plans the movements needed for speech.

Parents may notice things like:

• The same word sounds different each time
• Difficulty copying sounds or words
• Speech that can be hard to understand
• Frustration when trying to communicate

Did you know speech therapy can also support skills children use when writing? ✏️

Writing involves much more than putting letters on paper. Children need to find the right words, organize their thoughts, build sentences, and communicate their ideas clearly.

And many of those skills are connected to speech and language development.

As children grow, speech therapists may support the language skills that help with things like vocabulary, sentence building, storytelling, and expressing ideas. Skills they can use both when speaking and writing.

So if your child has trouble putting their thoughts into words, you may notice it in more than just conversation.

Does your child repeat phrases from you, a favorite show, or a song? 🤔

This is called echolalia. Repeating words or phrases they’ve heard before.

And something important for parents to know: echolalia does not automatically mean autism. While it can be common in autistic children, repeating language can happen for different reasons and can also be part of typical language development, especially at younger ages.

Sometimes, those repeated words may even be your child’s way of communicating something.

So, rather than looking at echolalia alone, it’s important to understand your child’s overall communication and development.

Looking for simple ways to connect with your neurodivergent child through play? 💜

You don’t need special toys or complicated activities. Sometimes, the best opportunities for connection are already happening during everyday play.

Here are 8 simple ideas you can try:

1️⃣ Get close and join in: Sit beside your child and show interest in what they’re doing.
2️⃣ Add simple words: Talk about what you see: “Fast car!” “Big ball!” “More bubbles!”
3️⃣ Bring in music and movement: Sing, clap, dance, or add silly sounds to make the moment more fun.
4️⃣ Let their interests guide you: Notice what your child enjoys and start there instead of directing the play.
5️⃣ Turn favorite toys into stories: Cars can go on adventures, animals can sing, and dolls can become part of a simple story.
6️⃣ Try doing what they do: Copy an action or sound your child makes. It can be a simple way to enter their world and encourage interaction.
7️⃣ Build on their play, little by little: Once you’re connected, try adding a new action or idea without taking over.
8️⃣ Choose connection over the “right” toy: A toy doesn’t have to match an age label perfectly. What matters most is whether your child enjoys it and it helps you interact together.

Most importantly, play doesn’t have to look a certain way to be meaningful. Follow your child’s interests, join their world, and build from there. ✨
