What makes a fear a phobia?
It’s not simply how intense the fear is.
As Dr. Jon Connelly explains, a phobia is a fear that the person experiencing it recognizes doesn’t make sense.
You can know something is safe.
You can understand there’s no logical reason to be afraid.
And the fear can still be there.
That disconnect is important.
In this video, Dr. Connelly explores what actually defines a phobia, shares a surprising example from his own childhood, and explains why understanding something intellectually isn’t always enough to change the way mind responds.
It’s also why he believes the best way to teach people how to create change is to show them how it’s done.
