This is one of the biggest reasons we believe in providing therapy in a child’s natural environment. 💛

Communication is a two-way street. Our job isn’t just to teach a child how to communicate — it’s also to help the people around them learn how to communicate with them.

Home-based therapy gives us the opportunity to coach parents and caregivers in real time: how to recognize their child’s communication attempts, respond in ways that encourage connection, model language at the right level, support AAC when needed, and create more opportunities for meaningful communication throughout everyday routines.

Because the goal isn’t for a child to communicate successfully for the duration of speech therapy. The goal is for them to feel heard, understood, and able to communicate with the people in their lives every day.

We’re not just teaching children communication skills. We’re teaching families how to become better communication partners. ❤️

Sometimes the learning starts with watching. 👀

This little one isn’t even 2 yet, and at first, he simply observed as I modeled how to put each animal back in its box, find the lid, close it, and put it away. With repetition, a predictable clean-up song, and plenty of time to process, he began joining in—finding the animals and lids and completing more of the routine independently.

Before children are talking, they are already developing important preverbal communication skills, including:

• Watching and learning from another person
• Imitating actions
• Sharing attention around the same activity
• Anticipating what comes next in a familiar routine
• Following simple directions
• Taking turns and participating with another person
• Using gestures, body movements, and actions to communicate
• Building the understanding that their actions have meaning

This activity also supports functional play, sequencing, problem-solving, matching, fine-motor coordination, and early language concepts like “in,” “on,” “close,” and “put away.”

In speech therapy, we aren’t only working on spoken words. We are building the foundational skills that help communication develop.

And remember: a child who is quietly watching may still be actively learning. 💛

Joint attention doesn’t always look like eye 👀 contact.

Autistic children may show they’re sharing attention, interest, or excitement in many meaningful ways—like moving closer, pausing to listen, handing you an object, leaning into your body, imitating your actions, or physically bracing with anticipation.

When we expand our idea of what joint attention can look like, we’re better able to notice and respond to a child’s attempts to connect.

Connection is still happening—even when it looks different than expected. 🩷💙💛

Fluency disorders affect how smoothly speech flows — not what a child wants to say, but how it comes out.

You might hear repetitions, stretched sounds, or moments where speech feels “stuck.” Some children may also show tension or frustration when trying to get their words out.

Occasional disfluencies can be typical, especially in young children. But when it becomes frequent, persists over time, or starts to impact confidence, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Early support can make a big difference in helping children communicate more comfortably and confidently 💛
