Some children get better on everything you’d expect to work. Some don’t.
Same protocol. Same clinician. Different child.
For years I assumed the ones who didn’t respond were missing a piece of the functional medicine workup. They weren’t. What they were missing was the cellular signal of safety – the all-clear that the alarm bells can switch off, and the body and mind can return to health. Until a child’s nervous system registers safety, the cellular alarm doesn’t switch off, and healing doesn’t finish.
This is the Health and Healing Cycle, and the alarm that sets off the Cell Danger Response – so beautifully described by Dr. Robert Naviaux.
🧠 That’s the piece almost nobody was taught. Not the diet, not the exposures, not the sleep. The signal that tells the body it’s over.
It’s also the most accessible thing to change. Breathing, humming, singing, gargling. Most of that list is free.
I’ve walked through the whole mechanism in the post — cellular how the alarm gets stuck, what the vagus has to do with it, how to measure vagal tone, and why the microbiome is part of the same conversation.
This is such an important topic for pediatric practitioners that as Chair for A4M Pediatrics, I’ve chosen 2 sessions on this for our Pediatrics Reimagined Summit in Nasvhille. Mine on Friday discussing the microbiome, neuroception and the cell danger response. And Navaz Habib, DC | Vagus Nerve Doc Pediatric V.A.G.U.S. Protocol on Saturday. I’ll give you the mechanism. He’ll give you the protocol.
