Before surgery, patients often ask us the questions they’ve been holding onto: What if I blink? What will I feel? How will I know what to do?

We talk through what to expect for your procedure, including how we’ll keep you comfortable and whether we need you to look somewhere or hold still. You don’t have to figure any of it out on your own. We’ll guide you, and you can always tell us if something feels uncomfortable.

Most practices get sold. This one got handed down.

In 1984, Dr. Alan Aker and Dr. Ann Kasten opened their doors in Boca Raton. He was already working with lens implant techniques that were brand new at the time, and 375 physicians would eventually come to learn them from him. She had come from OB-GYN and chose ophthalmology instead, a decision that became her life's work.

They built their own surgery center rather than send patients elsewhere, because they wanted to shape the whole day, from the moment you walk in to the moment you go home. No one was going to be treated like a chart number.

Four decades later, the name on the building is still the family inside it. Dr. Alan Aker operates alongside his son, Dr. Jonathan Aker.

It’s hard to believe something this small can play such an important role in how you see.

The lens Dr. Aker is holding is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. During cataract surgery, the eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with this clear artificial lens.

An IOL is soft and flexible, allowing it to be folded for insertion through a small incision. Once inside the eye, it gently unfolds and settles into position. Different types of IOLs can provide different ranges of vision.

Cataract surgery is more than a service we offer, it is a cornerstone of the Aker Kasten legacy. For more than 40 years, our family-run practice has helped advance cataract and refractive surgery in South Florida while providing comprehensive medical and diagnostic eye care.

Our Boca Raton facility brings it all together under one roof, with medical and diagnostic ophthalmology on the first floor and a Medicare-certified Ambulatory Surgery Center dedicated to laser cataract surgery and other advanced eye procedures on the second.

7 everyday habits affecting your eye health, and #5 is one most people never consider.

1. Sleeping in your contact lenses - Unless specifically directed by your eye doctor, sleeping in contacts can significantly increase the risk of infection.
2. Showering or swimming in contacts- Water and contact lenses are not a safe combination.
3. Rubbing your eyes - Frequent or vigorous rubbing can irritate the ocular surface and place unnecessary stress on the cornea.
4. Skipping sunglasses - UV exposure accumulates over time. Choose sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays.
5. Sleeping with a fan pointed directly at your face - That constant airflow can increase tear evaporation and make dryness or irritation worse overnight.
6. Holding onto eye makeup for too long - Expired products and unclean applicators can introduce bacteria close to the eyes.
7. Skipping comprehensive eye exams because you “see fine” - Several serious eye conditions can begin without noticeable symptoms or changes in vision.

We know. The eye rub feels so good in the moment. 😅 However, Dr. Aker explains why making it a habit is something you really want to rethink.

Chronic or vigorous rubbing is one of the leading contributors to a condition called keratoconus, where the cornea gradually thins and begins to bulge outward into a cone shape, distorting your vision in ways that can be really difficult to correct.

It starts slowly, and most people don't notice until the damage is already done.

So, next time your eyes are itching, reach for the drops and not your fingers.

You can be seeing clearly, feeling fine, and still have changes happening within your eyes.

Sungazing is trending, your retina isn’t a fan. ☀️

Looking directly at the sun, even for a short period of time, can expose the retina to intense light and cause a condition known as solar retinopathy, or damage to the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

What makes this especially concerning? You may not feel pain while the damage is occurring. Symptoms can appear afterward and may include blurred or distorted vision, a blind or dark spot in the center of your v

ision, changes in color perception, or light sensitivity.

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates much more than how clearly you can see. It gives your ophthalmologist an opportunity to assess the overall health of your eyes and look for early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and other changes that may affect your vision.

Many eye diseases can begin without noticeable symptoms. You may be seeing well and still have changes occurring within the eye.

Regular eye exams allow us to establish a baseline, monitor changes over time and identify potential concerns as early as possible, when treatment may be most effective.

Your eyes can also provide important clues about your overall health, including signs associated with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Tired of eye drops that never actually fix anything? Same.

Dry eye isn't just uncomfortable, it's your eyes telling you something is wrong. And masking it with drops every few hours is not the answer.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light therapy) gets to the root cause. The blocked oil glands along your eyelid that are actually responsible for that constant gritty, burning feeling. A few quick sessions and most patients notice a real difference , without a single drop.
