Why do your legs look and feel more swollen at the end of the day than they did that morning?
Water retention occurs when excess fluid collects in the tissues of the lower legs, ankles, or feet. It may leave behind deep sock marks, make shoes feel tighter, or cause the legs to feel puffy, heavy, or uncomfortable. Although swelling can have many possible causes, the way it changes throughout the day may provide useful clues.
When chronic venous insufficiency is involved, weakened vein valves allow blood to collect in the lower legs instead of moving efficiently toward the heart. This increases pressure inside the veins and can push fluid into the surrounding tissues. Vein-related swelling often worsens after prolonged sitting or standing and may improve with walking, leg elevation, or overnight rest. It may also occur with aching, heaviness, throbbing, visible veins, itching, or skin discoloration near the ankles.
Persistent swelling should be evaluated because treatment depends on what is causing it. A provider may review your symptoms and medical history, examine your legs, and recommend testing when a venous cause is suspected.
