The size of the wave of injuries I worked with when pickleball took us by storm is comparable to the same size of the wave of injuries Iām seeing with Pilates right now.
Itās not the sport or modality thatās the issue. Itās finding a class that fits your needs. As much as I support group training, sometimes you get into a class that you feel pressured to perform higher than your capabilities.
Iāve seen similar injuries when working with yoga. Or hot yoga as well.
If you decide to do a class environment. Control your self, even if the instructor is pushy thatās ok. Coaches or trainers lean into asking for more. Talk with the trainer about your fitness level, find a class that fits your level of intensity and fitness level or age group. Remember, a class lasts 45-60 minutes and a minor injury potentially takes 1-6 weeks for a full recovery for most people and thatās a minor injury.
Pilates is great for you, CrossFit is great, yoga or hot yoga is great for you, cycling is great for you, pickleball is great for you. You just need to find a class that you can get into and grow with vs feeling like you need to keep up with.
Remember, the sport, modality or mechanism isnāt the issue. The approach and level of intensity might need some fine tuning so we can enjoy those benefits and eventually get better and stronger as we grow with it.
Sincerely, a very caring sports LMT that works with injuries š«¶š½.
