Did you know that not all swallowing "e-stim" is the same?

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) can be a valuable tool for treating dysphagia—but the equipment, treatment protocol, and clinician training all matter.

That's why we use Ampcare® ESP. Rather than simply applying electrical stimulation, Ampcare combines NMES with swallowing exercises and specialized positioning to create a targeted, evidence-based therapy program designed to improve swallowing function.

Every patient receives an individualized treatment plan because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dysphagia rehabilitation.

Many people are surprised to learn that swallowing difficulties can occur even when imaging and testing don't show a structural problem.

Phagaphobia is a legitimate condition where psychological factors can contribute to very real swallowing symptoms. That doesn't mean the symptoms are "made up"- they're real, distressing, and deserve proper evaluation.

Before this diagnosis is made, it's important to rule out other medical causes with a comprehensive swallowing evaluation. Once the other conditions have been excluded, treatment often involves collaboration between speech-language pathologist, medical providers, and mental health professionals to help patients regain confidence and return to eating comfortably.

If you're struggling with unexplained swallowing difficulty, you don't have to navigate it alone. We're here to help determine what's causing your symptoms and guide you toward the appropriate treatment.

Camryn is the clinic’s operations coordinator. She recently graduated from Boise State University and will be attending Idaho State University- Meridian in the fall to pursue a Masters in Speech-Language Pathology.

✨ Dysphagia Awareness Month ✨

For our final post on FEES, we are giving you an inside look at a real FEES exam!

In this video, you’ll see a swallow where liquid enters the area above the vocal folds (this is called pe*******on) and then passes below the vocal folds into the airway (this is aspiration). These events can increase the risk of coughing, choking, or respiratory complications.

One of the biggest benefits of FEES is that it allows us to see swallowing in real time! During the exam, we can try different strategies, exercises, and swallowing techniques to find what works best and helps keep patients eating and drinking as safely as possible.
