When I was a kid, this looked like nothing more than a flapping piece of fabric.
As I’ve gotten older, it’s meaning has become far greater.
I often think about the 13 colonies represented by those stripes and can’t imagine the bravery it took when they decided the risk of creating independence far surpassed the risk of staying under rule of a foreign nation.
Many of them felt monarchy was unnatural, British rule was tyrannical, and the only logical path forward was that a continent-the US- create their own republic and become a self-sufficient people.
Since that day, brave men and women have been fighting for us to keep our freedom and Americans have been making a way when there didn’t seem to be one.
Thomas Paine argued “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.”
Now that I’m older, I think the greatest freedom we have in this country is the freedom to try. Being American doesn’t automatically mean success or what we’re pursuing will be a guarantee It’s won’t. But many countries won’t even allow their citizens the right to try.
Like the colonists, the path [to what you want] might seem nearly impossible, but if that resistance wasn’t there, the dream obtained would feel cheap and mean nothing. The struggle is what makes it feel worth it, dear, and give it its value.
If there’s something you want- go get it- for no other reason than you live in a country where you can.
Happy Birthday, America and THANK YOU to the brave men and women who have fought to keep it free for the last 250 years.
