Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research

Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research Period. In 1990, Laura Evans ended her 7th week in isolation during a bone marrow transplant to fight Stage III breast cancer. Aconcagua. At 22,841 feet, Mt.

Expedition Inspiration is fighting to find a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime so that we can save our daughters, mothers, brothers, sisters and all those we love from the disease. During her isolation, she dreamed of combining her two passions: mountain climbing and finding a cure for breast cancer. She imagined a team of breast cancer survivors and their supporters overcoming the challenges

of mountain climbing together to bring awareness and financial support to finding a cure for breast cancer. It would be a visible tribute to the courage of breast cancer survivors everywhere. To Laura, there was no more appropriate parallel between summiting one of the world's tallest peaks and fighting breast cancer. After recovery, Laura's dreams turned to action as she founded Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research in 1995 with Peter Whittaker. Laura set out to climb Argentina's Mt. Aconcagua is the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere. In February 1995, Laura and Peter Whittaker, premier international mountain guide and founder of Summits Adventure Travel, led a team of 17 breast cancer survivors to Aconcagua's summit. They raised awareness, research funds and hope for the breast cancer cause. From this initial effort, Expedition Inspiration has continued its mission to find breast cancer cures in our lifetime with hikes, climbs, an Annual Symposium, Young Investigator Awards and other fundraising events.

Meet Molly. πŸ’—

Molly knows what it means to do hard things.

After a breast cancer diagnosis, she endured a year of treatments followed by the often-overlooked journey of mental and emotional healing. While recovery continues, one thing has remained constant: the unwavering support of the people around her.

"There was no way out but through."

Throughout her journey, Molly held onto every letter, email, sticky note, photo, meal, flower delivery, and thoughtful surprise that reminded her she was never alone. On the hardest days, when simply making it from the bed to the couch felt like a victory, she looked ahead to this moment, believing she would one day be strong enough to climb a mountain.

Now, that day is here.

This summer, Molly is joining Expedition Inspiration to climb Galena Peak alongside an incredible community of breast cancer survivors. Together, they are climbing for a cure, honoring those who couldn't make the journey, and raising funds to support life-changing breast cancer research and survivorship programs.

As Molly beautifully says, "Your courage strengthens others, and others strengthen you." That truth carried her through cancer, and now she's paying it forward, one step at a time.

We're honored to celebrate Molly's courage, resilience, and determination as she takes on this incredible challenge. Every step she climbs is a reminder that hope is stronger when we climb together. πŸ’—πŸ”οΈ

Meet Therese. πŸ’—β›°οΈ

For someone who has always loved climbing mountains, exploring the world around her, and teaching science, this journey is incredibly fitting. What Therese never expected was that, during her first two years of retirement, she would become part of the very science she spent her career teaching about.

"I certainly didn't expect to be a science experiment the first two years of retirement, but hey, I'm thankful for the chemo, surgery, radiation, medications, and blood work. I am so appreciative of all the scientists and research being done for breast cancer."

After facing breast cancer herself, Therese has gained a deeper appreciation for the researchers, doctors, and scientists who dedicate their lives to advancing treatments and searching for a cure. She has experienced firsthand how important medical research is, and now she is using her own journey to give back.

Throughout her career, Therese loved teaching science and inspiring others to understand the world around them. Now, she is combining that passion with her love of climbing mountains as she joins Expedition Inspiration in their mission to raise money for breast cancer research.

This climb represents so much more than reaching the summit. It is about celebrating survival, honoring those who have fought this disease, remembering those we have lost, and supporting the scientists working toward a future where breast cancer no longer takes the lives of so many mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, and daughters.

Therese never asked for financial help throughout her own treatment journey, but she feels strongly about supporting the research that made her care possible and could one day help save countless lives.

Since 1995, Expedition Inspiration has funded more than $1.8 million in breast cancer research grants, providing resources directly to researchers working toward new discoveries and better treatments. Their fundraising also supports young scientists who are dedicating their careers to finding a cure.

We are honored to share Therese’s story and cheer her on as she works toward the summit. Every donation, no matter the size, helps Therese reach her personal climb goal of $2,200 while supporting Expedition Inspiration’s overall goal of raising $30,000 for breast cancer research.

Join us in celebrating Therese’s courage, resilience, and determination as she climbs for hope, science, and a future without breast cancer. πŸ’—β›°οΈ

Meet Teri. πŸ’— Teri Argo

On July 23, 2024, Teri became one of the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.

What began as a routine annual screening mammogram led to the discovery of an 8mm tumor that had already spread to three lymph nodes. Thanks to early detection, an incredible medical team, and advancements in breast cancer treatment, Teri underwent surgery to remove the tumor and affected lymph nodes, followed by 30 rounds of radiation. Because of modern tumor testing, she was able to avoid chemotherapy, a treatment her doctors said likely would have been necessary just a few years earlier.

Now, as she approaches her two-year cancer anniversary, Teri is taking on a new challenge that is just as meaningful as her cancer journey.

"This whole thing is a stretch for me. Ever since cancer, I have not trusted my body. Through this climb, I am trying to learn to trust it again."

This summer, Teri will join fellow breast cancer survivors as they climb Galena Peak in Idaho with Expedition Inspiration. Standing at over 11,000 feet, the mountain represents more than a physical challenge. It's a symbol of healing, resilience, and reclaiming confidence after cancer. Together, these women are raising critical funds to support breast cancer research and bring hope to future generations.

Teri and her husband, Doug, have been married for 44 years. Recently retired, they love spending their time horseback riding, camping, hiking, fishing, and exploring the outdoors with their border collie, Hazel, and their horses, Lily and Shooter. Throughout her career, Teri served others as an Occupational Therapist and Therapeutic Horseback Riding Instructor, helping people rebuild strength and confidence. Now, she is embracing that same journey for herself.

Teri is climbing for every woman whose life has been touched by breast cancer. Her story is a powerful reminder that healing doesn't end when treatment does. Sometimes, healing means learning to trust your body again, one step at a time.

We're honored to share Teri's story and cheer her on as she takes on Galena Peak in support of Expedition Inspiration and the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. πŸ’—

Every step forward is a victory.

Training isn't always easy, but every mile climbed, every challenge overcome, and every moment of perseverance brings us closer to something bigger than ourselves. This Monday, remember that progress doesn't have to be perfect. Just keep moving forward.

Together, we're climbing with hope, courage, and purpose, one step at a time. πŸ”οΈπŸ’•

Today's Climber Spotlight is Amy!

Amy is a wife, mom of two, breast cancer survivor, and someone who refuses to let one of life's hardest chapters define the rest of her story.

After moving to Idaho's Treasure Valley, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 43 years old. Her children were still in elementary school, and like so many families facing a cancer diagnosis, life changed overnight. Throughout treatment, she made the deeply personal decision to go completely flat after her mastectomy, a choice she thoughtfully considered over the course of seven years. Today, she embraces that decision as part of her journey and her strength.

Now, Amy is turning survivorship into purpose by joining Expedition Inspiration's Galena Peak fundraising trek. While training, she balances a full-time career as an office administrator, regular strength training, and as many hikes as she can fit into her schedule. Every mile she walks is a reminder of how far she has come and a way to honor those who are still fighting.

Expedition Inspiration's mission is one that Amy believes in wholeheartedly. The organization not only helps fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, including grants for promising young investigators, but also empowers survivors to reconnect with their bodies, confidence, and sense of adventure through hiking and mountain climbing.

Amy hopes her journey will inspire hope, encourage other survivors, and help raise critical funds for breast cancer research. Whether through a donation, a prayer, or simply cheering her on, every act of support helps bring us one step closer to better treatments and, one day, a cure.

If you would like to be apart of the cure, you can donate on Amy's page: https://www.pledgereg.com/558660
