Sometimes healthcare looks like admiring tomatoes.

Today reminded me why I love making house calls.

I walked into a patient's home and before we even started talking about medications or blood pressure...

They said,

"Come look at my garden!"

So we did.

We walked outside and they proudly showed me the tomatoes they had been waiting all summer to grow.

To someone else, they were just tomato plants.

To me, they were something much bigger.

They were independence.

They were progress.

They were proof that this patient was still doing something they loved.

Moments like that remind me that healthcare isn't just about lab results or prescriptions.

It's about helping people continue living the life they've worked so hard to build.

Sometimes the best part of my day has nothing to do with medicine.

Things I Wish More People Knew...

I had a patient say something to me today that I hear all the time.

They looked at me and said...

"I guess I'm just getting older."

They were under 40

The truth is, I hear that from people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Some changes do come with age.

But feeling exhausted all the time...

Losing motivation...

Having no energy...

Struggling to sleep...

Giving up hobbies you used to enjoy...

Those things shouldn't automatically be blamed on getting older.

Sometimes there's a reason.

Sometimes it's low iron.

Poor sleep.

Vitamin deficiencies.

Medication side effects.

Hormones.

Thyroid issues.

Stress.

Or something else entirely.

One of my favorite parts of being a healthcare provider is helping people figure out why they don't feel like themselves anymore.

Because no matter whether you're 35 or 85...

❤️ You deserve to feel like yourself.

We still make house calls.

Just not on a horse... only horsepower. 😉

Sometimes people laugh when I tell them I make house calls.

"Wait... they still do that?"

Yep. We sure do.

Healthcare has changed a lot over the years.

Appointments feel shorter.

Waiting rooms feel longer.

And sometimes it feels like we're all moving just a little too fast.

House calls slow things down.

We sit at the kitchen table.

We meet the dog. (Usually before the patient. 😂)

We talk.

We answer questions.

We look at the whole picture—not just what's on the computer screen.

Turns out, there was a reason people loved house calls all those years ago.

Some things are worth bringing back.

The Best Part of My Job Isn't Medicine...

It's the relationships.

Over the years, my patients have sent me home with flowers, tomatoes, zucchini... and more plant starts than I know what to do with.

In fact, this little corner of my home is filled with plants that came from patients.

Apparently, everyone has decided I always need "just one more start." 🌱😊

And honestly... I love every single one of them.

Because every plant reminds me of a conversation.

A story.

A family.

A life I've had the privilege of being a small part of.

Nobody has ever given me a spider plant because I got their cholesterol under control.

They've shared these little pieces of their lives because we've built a relationship.

To me, that's what healthcare should be.

Yes, I love helping people manage diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic illnesses.

But the best part of my job has never been the medicine.

It's getting to know the incredible people behind the medical history.

Every time I water these plants, I smile because I remember the people who shared them with me.

And that's something pretty special. ❤️

Twenty years ago, I became a nurse because I wanted to care for people.

Over the years, healthcare changed. Appointments became shorter, paperwork became longer, and too often I found myself spending more time looking at a computer than looking at my patients.

I knew there had to be a better way.

That’s why I founded Idaho Outreach Medicine.

Today, we do something that feels almost old-fashioned—we make house calls. We slow down. We sit at the kitchen table. We meet spouses, children, caregivers, and even family pets. We see the throw rugs that could cause a fall, the empty refrigerator that tells a bigger story, and the medication bottles that explain why someone is struggling.

Those are things you simply can’t learn in a 15-minute office visit.

Our mission has never been to see the most patients. Our mission is to care for people exceptionally well.

As we’ve grown, I’m looking for someone who shares that mission.

We’re hiring a Nurse Practitioner who believes medicine is about relationships first. Someone who values clinical excellence, compassion, and the privilege of being invited into a patient’s home.

This role is for someone who wants to practice with autonomy, think critically, and build meaningful relationships with patients and families. It isn’t the right fit for everyone—and that’s okay. But for the right person, I truly believe it’s one of the most rewarding ways to practice medicine.

House Call Chronicles

One thing nobody tells you about being a house call provider...

The dogs are convinced I'm there to see them.

Almost every house call starts the same way...

"Hi! Good to see you!"

🐕 Excited dog enters the chat.

Tail wagging.

Toy in mouth.

Immediately requesting pets and belly rubs.

And honestly... I can't say no.

So before I see the patient, I usually spend the first few minutes making sure the four-legged family member knows they're important too. ❤️

Then, after a full day of house calls, I go home...
..where my own dogs give me the look.

You know the one.

"Excuse me... you smell like other dogs."

Apparently I have some explaining to do.

One of the unexpected perks of making house calls is getting to meet the entire family—including the furry members.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

One of the questions I get asked is...

"What's the secret to staying independent as we get older?"

After thousands of house calls over the years, I've noticed a few things that the patients doing the best seem to have in common.

They keep moving—even if it's just a walk around the block or working in the garden.

They work on maintaining their strength because strong muscles help keep us independent.

They try to fuel their bodies with healthy food most of the time (and yes... dessert is still okay once in a while ).

They know what medications they're taking and aren't afraid to ask questions.

And they have a healthcare provider who knows them—not just their medical history, but who they are, what they enjoy, and what's important to them.

None of us can stop getting older.

But there are a lot of things we can do to help ourselves stay healthy, active, and independent for as long as possible.

Because at the end of the day, independence isn't about doing everything on your own.

It's about continuing to do the things you love.

🇺🇸 July has always been one of my favorite months.

We celebrate our country's independence with family, friends, backyard BBQs, parades, and fireworks.

But working in healthcare has given me a different perspective on what independence really means.

For many of my patients, independence isn't about fireworks at all.

It's staying in the home they've built a lifetime of memories in.

It's still being able to drive to the grocery store.

It's spending an afternoon working in the garden.

It's walking the dog around the neighborhood.

It's making it to church on Sunday.

It's getting down on the floor to play with the grandkids.

Those things may seem simple, but they're everything.

One of the greatest privileges of being a house call provider is helping people continue doing the things they love for as long as possible.

That's why I love what I do.

Healthcare isn't just about treating blood pressure, diabetes, or a sore throat.

It's about helping people maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life.

As we begin July, I hope we all take a moment to appreciate the little things that make us feel independent.

Because sometimes the greatest medicine isn't just adding years to life...
