As both a therapist and a parent, this short PSA episode from Crime Ju**ie really got my attention.
AI technology has become powerful enough that scammers can now clone voices and create convincing images to make it appear that a loved one is in danger. In some cases, families have received frantic phone calls that sound exactly like their child or family member, only to discover it was part of a scam designed to extort money.
One of the simplest things families can do right now is establish a "safe word" or "safe phrase" that only the people in your inner circle would know. Our family has had one since our kids were little. Originally, it was a way to protect them if someone ever tried to pick them up and claimed Mom or Dad sent them because of an emergency. Now that our kids are older, have phones, social media, and their own digital footprint, that same safe word has taken on a whole new purpose.
No one ever thinks they'll be the target of a scam like this until it happens. A five-minute conversation with your family today could save you a lot of fear, confusion, and potentially money down the road.
Better to be prepared than assume it could never happen to you.
