Hair loss counseling starts with better questions.

Dr. Oyetewa Asempa shares a simple but powerful shift for alopecia and hair loss visits: do not start with assumptions.

Ask how the patient styles their hair.
Ask how often they wash it.
Ask what kind of product they actually want to use.
Ask what their routine looks like when they are not sitting in your clinic.

That context can change how recommendations are received, especially when the goal is to guide patients toward safer, more sustainable hair care practices without making the conversation feel personal or judgmental.

Ask first. Guide second. Save this for your next hair loss counseling conversation.

Scarring alopecia can be one of those diagnoses where the biggest clue is not always obvious from across the exam room.

Dr. Oyetewa Asempa’s RAPIDS reminder was direct: when you are evaluating hair loss, especially possible scarring hair loss, magnification matters.

Scale. Redness. Perifollicular hyperpigmentation. Follicular detail. Those clues can change the direction of the diagnosis, but only if you actually get close enough to see them.

So consider this your dermatoscope nudge for the next scalp exam. 🔎

JAK inhibitor safety confidence is the part worth talking about.

The efficacy data for oral JAK inhibitors is not usually where the conversation gets stuck.

For conditions like atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata, the bigger challenge is often helping clinicians, patients, and families feel informed enough to move from “I know this can work” to “I understand how to weigh the safety conversation.”

That is the nuance Dr. Lisa Swanson brought into the room at RAPIDS.

And honestly, it is the kind of nuance dermatology education needs more of. Not just whether a treatment works, but how clinicians build enough confidence in the data to explain it clearly when the decision matters.

What part of JAK inhibitor counseling do you think deserves more attention?
