STOP ASKING…

“WHAT DID YOU DO AT SCHOOL?” 😅

Getting the classic “I don’t know”?
Try asking more specific questions instead! 👇

👯 WHO DID YOU SIT WITH?
Encourages recalling people & social experiences.

😂 WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING TODAY?
Builds storytelling & recalling events.

😮 DID ANYTHING SURPRISE YOU?
Encourages conversation about experiences & emotions.

⭐ WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART?
Practices preferences & descriptive language.

🤔 WOULD YOU RATHER ___ OR ___ TOMORROW?
Offering choices makes it easier to respond & keeps the conversation going.

💙 REMEMBER:

Specific questions = easier answers!

You don’t need to turn dinner into a therapy session. 😉
Just ask, listen, and let the conversation grow.

🏴‍☠️ It looks like play… but an OT sees SO many opportunities for skill-building!

Pop the Pirate is a simple game that can help children work on fine motor skills, hand strength, hand-eye coordination, motor planning, following directions, and social skills—all while having fun! 💙

This is what we love about play-based therapy: the activity doesn’t have to look like “work” for meaningful learning to happen. ✨

Sometimes the most therapeutic activities are the ones kids are asking to play again and again! 🥰

📚💙 This book would be perfect for kids who…
Sometimes finding the right book can make all the difference! Whether your little one is getting ready for school, navigating big feelings, building communication skills, working on social skills, or simply LOVES a good repetitive story, books create so many natural opportunities to learn through connection and play. ✨

Reading together can help children:

🗣️ Build vocabulary & language
💭 Talk about emotions & experiences
🔄 Practice sequencing & predicting
🤝 Explore social skills & perspective-taking
🎯 Follow directions and engage with others

And remember—you don’t have to read every word on every page! Follow your child’s interests, pause to talk, point to pictures, make silly sounds, ask questions, or let them take the lead. 💙

☀️📚 Books we’re loving as summer comes to an end!
As we get closer to back-to-school season, these are some of our favorite books to help little ones talk about new routines, big feelings, and all the exciting things that come with a new school year! 💙
Reading together is also a wonderful way to build speech and language skills through everyday moments. Try asking questions like:
🗣️ “What do you think will happen next?”
💭 “How do you think they feel?”
📖 “What happened first?”
👀 “What do you see?”
💬 “What would you do?”
You don’t need to turn story time into a therapy session—just reading, talking, and connecting creates meaningful opportunities for language development. ✨

AAC is like giving someone glasses 👓Glasses don’t stop your eyes from working —they help you see!! 👀

Research consistently shows that AAC does not hinder speech development. In fact, it often helps by reducing frustration, increasing language exposure, and creating more opportunities for meaningful communication. 🌟

Every child deserves a voice. Whether that voice is spoken, signed, or on a device, communication is the goal. 🩵🗣️

📚 Questions to Ask While Reading That Build Speech & Language Skills 💙

Storytime is about so much more than reading the words on the page! Asking simple questions throughout a book helps build vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and conversation skills.

Try asking:

👀 “What do you see?”
Encourages observation skills and vocabulary development.

🤔 “What do you think will happen next?”
Builds prediction, problem-solving, and sequencing skills.

🗣️ “How do you think they feel?”
Supports emotional vocabulary and perspective-taking.

📖 “Can you tell me what happened?”
Strengthens storytelling, sequencing, and recall.

❓ “Why do you think they did that?”
Encourages reasoning, inference, and higher-level language skills.

🌟 “What would you do?”
Promotes conversation, creativity, and expressive language.

The best part? There are no wrong answers! Keep reading fun by following your child’s lead, expanding on their responses, and celebrating every attempt to communicate.

💙 Every story is an opportunity to build communication—one page at a time.

✨ The Power of Cause-and-Effect Toys ✨
They may look like simple toys, but cause-and-effect toys can be powerful tools for learning and development! 💙
When a child pushes a button and a toy lights up, drops a ball down a ramp and watches it roll, or presses a switch to make something happen, they’re learning an important concept:
👉 “My actions have an effect.”
Cause-and-effect toys help children develop:
🗣️ Communication skills through requesting, commenting, and shared attention
👀 Joint attention by engaging with both the toy and another person
🧠 Problem-solving skills as they figure out how to make the toy work
🎯 Attention and engagement through motivating, predictable outcomes
🤝 Social interaction through turn-taking and play with others
💡 Early cognitive skills by helping children understand how their actions impact the world around them
The best part? Kids think they’re just having fun while they’re building foundational skills for communication, learning, and play!
What’s your favorite cause-and-effect toy? Let us know below! 👇

☀️ Too hot to play outside for long? Try these fun, therapist-approved summer activities that help build important skills while keeping kids engaged! 💙

🧊 Ice Painting
Freeze water with food coloring into ice cubes and let your child paint as they melt! This activity encourages creativity, strengthens fine motor skills, and provides a fun sensory experience while talking about colors, shapes, and what they see.

🧸 Toy Rescue
Freeze small toys in a container of ice and let your child “rescue” them using warm water, spray bottles, or toy tools. This builds hand strength, problem-solving skills, patience, and language as they describe what they’re doing.

☀️ Shadow Tracing
Place favorite toys or animals in the sun and trace their shadows with sidewalk chalk. Kids practice visual perception, pre-writing skills, hand-eye coordination, and can expand language by naming and describing each object.

🌈 Nature Color Hunt
Head outside for a walk or explore your backyard and challenge your child to find something of every color. This activity builds vocabulary, observation skills, attention, and encourages conversations about the world around them.

The best part? These activities feel like play—but they’re also supporting speech, language, sensory, fine motor, and cognitive development every step of the way! 🌿✨

📌 Save this post for your next hot summer day and let us know which activity your child is excited to try first!
