This little book is full of little gold nuggets. Not just about being busy, but about life and people in general. Definitely worth checking out, especially for counselors.

Doing something because you want to love God and love others faithfully is one thing. Doing things to get other people to love you is quite another. Doing things to meet other people’s expectations and gain favor is the operating principle of people-pleasing.

"People often call it low self-esteem, but people-pleasing is actually a form of pride and narcissism." - DeYoung, Kevin

Biblical counseling should never become a substitute for the discipleship and community you should be receiving in the local church.

The psalmist invites us to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8), and discipleship is the table that God has set for us.

Counselors, are you trying to bring people to know more deeply the God that may or may not transform people’s circumstances, or are you trying to fix them yourself?

That deep suffering your counselee is experiencing, God is using it, to shape and transform them. There is no magic verse, or prayer, that will make it all go away; only God can do that. We can teach people how to have better responses to their suffering, but they need the grace and mercy of Christ, and to be reminded that the God of creation is still working in their lives. If all we ever do is tell people, “Read this passage and pray every night (do this), and you will not suffer any more (and live),” we will do more damage than good. God’s reminder to Paul is a reminder to us: “My grace is sufficient for you.” (2 Cor. 12:7-10)
