Is your child 5 to 10 years old and does NOT need glasses or contact lenses?
The New England College of Optometry is recruiting children for the Childhood Myopia Mechanisms Study, a federally funded research study about eye growth and myopia (nearsightedness). The study is designed to help researchers learn which eye and vision measures may predict childhood myopia. Participation is voluntary and will not affect clinical care.
Children may be eligible if they are 5 to 10 years old, have normal vision and do not need glasses or contact lenses, and have no history of eye disease, eye surgery, seizures, or epilepsy.
Some families may be offered a brief research vision screening before the baseline study visit. The research vision screening does not determine final eligibility. Final eligibility is determined only during the baseline study visit at NECO.
If enrolled, four study visits will be scheduled within approximately 90 days. At each study visit, children will undergo specialized eye and vision testing, non-invasive eye imaging and child-friendly computer-based visual tasks.
Families will receive compensation for completed study visits according to the approved study payment plan ($90 per completed study visit). Compensation will be paid by check, which will be mailed within approximately one week following each completed study visit. Children may also receive a small token of appreciation during study visits.
Families completing a preliminary research vision screening outside NECO will receive $30, regardless of the screening outcome.
