“They have ARFID, so imaging with SLP isn’t indicated.”
But here’s the question I keep coming back to: How do we know what we haven’t assessed?
ARFID is often discussed through a behavioral and psychiatric lens—and appropriately so. But when feeding skill or swallowing concerns are present, how do we know that fear or refusal is occurring in the absence of an underlying physiologic challenge if we haven’t looked?
Not every child with ARFID needs an instrumental swallow study. But were they incorrectly diagnosed ? Or properly diagnosed but there are comorbidities?
What we should be asking as SLP’s is
“ Is ARFID the whole picture?”
Tonight, we’re digging into the overlap between ARFID, choking fears, phobias, feeding skill, and swallowing—and why interdisciplinary assessment matters. 👀
