September is Su***de Prevention Month, but preventing su***de is a practice for every single day of the year. đĄđ€
We often post slogans like âmy door is always openâ or âjust call me.â While well-meaning, severe emotional distress and depression trick the brain into thinking, âI am a burden, no one wants to hear this.â Expecting a person in crisis to initiate contact is often too big of an ask.
Guidelines from the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP) and the WHO show that su***de prevention requires active reaching out.
Asking someone directly if they are thinking about su***de does not plant the idea in their mindâit offers immense relief. It tells them: âI see your pain, and I am strong enough to hold space for you.â
You donât need expert advice or perfect words. You just need to listen without trying to fix everything, help them connect with professional resources (like calling or texting 988), and check in on them tomorrow.
Be the person who reaches out first. It can truly save a life. đ©șâš
