Active Recovery Boston

Active Recovery Boston Chiropractic physicians, myofascial manipulators and movement specialists. Franklin, MA. Our goal is to provide you with a complete and accurate diagnosis.

Active Recovery Boston was founded in an attempt to revolutionize soft tissue injury treatment. Soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves) is often responsible for injuries ranging from headaches and back aches to iliotibial band syndrome and plantar fascitis. At Active Recovery Boston we recognize that any pain or dysfunction that you develop can be detrimental to your daily activities, your athletic performance, or your overall well being. From there, we will work with you to develop a cutting edge treatment plan that will enable you to function at your optimal potential. The mission of Active Recovery Boston is to be your soft tissue injury experts. Soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves) is involved in all kinds of injuries. Headaches, back pain, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, shin splints, and plantar fascitis are just the tip of the soft tissue injury iceberg. Despite the vast prevalence of soft tissue problems, the healthcare system has not made them a priority. The reasons are many. No single profession specializes in soft tissue injuries. Diagnosis cannot be made by technology such as metabolic tests or labs. And, unfortunately, there are no soft tissue wonder drugs. All of this adds up to a generally poor understanding of these kinds of injuries. We are changing this for the better. We understand soft tissue and know how to diagnose soft tissue problems. We integrate pertinent information gathered in your history and exam to form a "story" about your injury instead of merely "labeling" it. For example, you have pain on the outside of your knee. Instead of simply saying, "You have iliotibial band syndrome," we may say, "Your knee stabilizers are weak because you have a sciatic nerve entrapment. This weakness is causing your iliotibial band to work harder, producing pain." The problem doesn't begin at the iliotibial band. It ends there. If we only treat the end of the problem we won't be fixing it. Our mission is to fix your injury from the source. Our goal is not only to treat your injury, but also educate you in the process. We want you to know why you became injured. We want you to understand your treatment process. And we want you to have all the knowledge necessary to prevent your injury from returning.

Ever drank plenty of water, loaded up on electrolytes, and still ended up with a brutal muscle cramp?

You are not alone. For years, the standard advice for muscle cramping has been straightforward: drink more water and eat a banana.

While fluid and salt loss certainly play a role, modern sports science points to a much bigger culprit: neuromuscular fatigue.

Here is what is actually happening when a muscle locks up:

Nerve Signaling Imbalance: When your muscles reach extreme fatigue, the nerves that tell your muscle to contract start firing rapidly. At the same time, the sensors that tell your muscle to relax slow down.

The Spasm: This mismatch sends continuous excitatory signals to your nervous system, locking the muscle into a sustained contraction.

The Role of Electrolytes: Sweating out sodium, potassium, and magnesium alters the cellular environment, making relaxation harder. However, recent clinical studies show that fully hydrated athletes still cramp purely from muscle exhaustion.

Takeaway: You cannot out-hydrate muscle over-exhaustion. Preventing cramps comes down to smart load management, pacing, and targeted recovery.

Do you deal with recurring cramps during your training or races? Drop a comment below and let us know what you have noticed.

Train harder, hydrate smarter. Whether you’re gearing up for a season, training for a competition, or just staying active as an adult, sweating harder and more often means your electrolyte needs go up too.

Electrolytes help with fluid balance, muscle function, and the energy it takes to get through longer or more frequent training sessions.

But more isn’t always better, so it’s worth knowing when supplementation actually matters versus when your normal diet already has you covered.

Hip stability and knee stability go hand in hand, and this lunge variation is one of Dr. Tran’s go to moves for building both at once.

It challenges your balance while strengthening the muscles that support your knees and hips, which makes it a great addition to your routine whether you’re recovering from an injury or just want to move better day to day.

Try adding a few sets into your week and see how it feels. Have questions about form? Send us a message, we’re happy to help!
