💚 Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month 2026 💚

This year, Doc Wayne is celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month by challenging you to do something radical—log off and show up. In the era of doomscrolling and misinformation, engaging with your local community and building connections is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health.

Take time this month to consider your mental health needs. Whether simply adding a walk to your daily schedule or seeking professional support from clinicians like those at Doc Wayne's Community Clinic, there are plenty of opportunities to engage in self-care this and every month.

To kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, Doc Wayne's Managing Director Becky Roulier was honored to attend the annual Project Play Summit hosted by the Aspen Institute this week in Boston. The event featured a vast array of speakers from Heisman winners to Michelle Wu, Mayor of Boston, as more than 750 leaders from across the world of sports and youth development came together to discover new ways to engage young people in sports.

At Doc Wayne, we believe movement and play are fundamental to improving the mental health of youth and adults everywhere. Thank you to the Aspen Institute and Project Play for helping us move communities of youth and adults toward stronger mental health and brighter futures!

We are saddened to announce the passing of Susan Wayne, founder of Doc Wayne and tireless advocate for human services in Massachusetts. Susan founded the Doc Wayne Athletic League in 2002 as a program of Justice Resource Institute (JRI) in memory of her brother, Eli "Doc" Wayne, and his belief in the power of sport for positive youth development. Thanks to Susan's efforts and advocacy, Doc Wayne has grown to impact over a million youth and adults worldwide.

"Susan Wayne was an icon in the field of human services and its transformation from state-run institutions to community-based services," said Joesph M. Leavey, founder of Communities for People and board member of Doc Wayne. "She developed Justice Resource Institute into one of the top agencies in the country. She was a strong voice for the Mass Council of Human Service Providers, the Children's League of Massachusetts, and all children services.

"Her motivating spirit was her care for kids, and she was always proud of the program she started and named after her brother Doc Wayne. She stressed that this was a program that would use sports as a way to work with kids and help them live a more normalized life. Through a lot of hard work with some excellent staff, Doc Wayne continues to be very effective. She was a wonderful friend and a great loss to the entire human services community."

For the past two weeks, the world's eyes have been fixed on the 25th Olympic Winter Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy. While the focus may be on which country brings home the most medals, the stories of triumph and heartbreak from the Games really bring into focus the humanity of the athletes competing. And like so many of us, their mental health is foundational to their performance.

Maxim Naumov, U.S. Figure Skater, has been a staunch advocate for athlete mental health before and throughout this Olympics. Just over a year ago, the New England native lost his parents—former pairs world champions—to the tragic plane crash in which the skating community lost nearly two dozen members. Despite this, he was named to his first Olympic team this year, fulfilling the lifelong dream he shared with his parents. Through it all, he remained steadfast in the importance of his mental health as he navigated his loss. Today and every day, we at Doc Wayne are deeply appreciative of the advocacy for mental health from athletes like Maxim.

Meet Laura 💙🏃‍♀️

Laura is taking on the 2026 Boston Marathon as her first marathon ever and she’s doing it for youth mental health.

She’s running because she believes deeply in mental health and health equity, and wants every young person to have access to support, connection, and care through sports and play.

Her mantra for the miles ahead:
“The way to know life is to love many things.” – Vincent Van Gogh
