There is no greater compliment than earning the trust of the people we care for.

After donating a kidney to her daughter, Amanda, Jane Shuman, who has spent more than 20 years as a healthcare consultant, shared that the BIDMC Transplant Institute is the best-run healthcare practice she has ever encountered.

From the responsiveness of our team to the professionalism and compassion of our administrative staff, nurses, and physicians, she felt supported every step of the way.

Stories like Jane’s remind us why we do what we do. We are deeply grateful to every recipient, living donor, and family who places their trust in us during some of life’s most challenging moments.

If you or a loved one is considering a liver, kidney, or pancreas transplant, know that you do not have to navigate the journey alone.

Whether you need help understanding living donation, finding a living donor, or simply knowing where to start, our team is here to support you with your goals, your family, and your care.

A huge accomplishment for our Transplant Program and BIDMC.

Our team successfully performed the first fully robotic liver transplant in Boston and New England.

This included both the recipient hepatectomy (removal of the diseased liver) and implantation of the donor liver, performed entirely using robotic techniques through small incisions.

This milestone reflects years of innovation, surgical expertise, and collaboration across our transplant, anesthesia, nursing, and operating room teams.

Most importantly, it represents a new frontier in patient care. By advancing minimally invasive transplant techniques, we continue to push the boundaries of transplantation while striving to improve recovery and outcomes for our patients.

We are incredibly proud of everyone across BIDMC whose dedication, teamwork, and commitment made this historic achievement possible.

Adam and Lee have been best friends for 35 years. When Adam needed a liver transplant after more than a decade living with PSC, Lee was right there beside him, ready to give the gift of life.

Through it all, this duo leaned on what they do best: humor, friendship, and showing up for each other. They even made Dr. Martin Dib his own shirt to join their “original & spare parts” crew.

Living donation starts with a conversation. If you or a loved one needs a living organ donor but is unsure how to ask, the BIDMC Transplant Team can help. Our team can answer questions, support family conversations, and host meetings to talk through living donation together.

Betsy is one of 13 siblings, so when she learned she needed a kidney transplant, she thought there might be plenty of potential donors in the family. Betsy only needed one: her sister, Ruthie.

As they joke about “pulling the short straw,” their story reminds us that at BIDMC Transplant Institute, everyone gets the long straw.

Thank you to Ruthie and to all living donors who selflessly step forward for loved ones, friends, or even strangers, and place their trust in the BIDMC Transplant team.

If you or a loved one needs a living donor, ask your care team about our House Call Program to help start the conversation with family, friends, and community members.

When Chuck decided to donate a kidney to his son, his wife, Gloria, naturally carried the fears and emotions that any mother and spouse would feel.

Through it all, she knew the trust she had in the BIDMC Transplant Team and the way they cared for her entire family would help carry them forward and make everything okay.

Trust is more than a word to our team. It is the foundation of how we care for patients and families during life-changing moments, with compassion, honesty, expertise, and support every step of the way.

Thank you to every patient, donor, and family for putting your trust in the BIDMC Transplant Team. If you or a loved one wants help talking about living donation or finding a living donor, please ask your team how we can help.

Searching for a living kidney donor is more than finding a match. Sometimes it creates new friendships, renews old ones, and brings people into your life exactly when you need them most.

Kate Squared found that out when one Kate posted on Facebook, and the other felt an undeniable calling to respond. What followed was more than a transplant; it was the beginning of a lifelong bond.

If you feel called to learn more about living donation, visit our website to complete a short donor survey and see if you could be a candidate.

If you are searching for a living donor, talk with our team about how social media and your personal network can help share your story. You never know who may see it, or what could come from it.

John was told he was out of options, but he refused to give up.

After seeing local providers in Saint Croix, Virgin Islands, and specialists in Miami, John was diagnosed with a Klatskin tumor that had spread extensively. The recommendation was to stay on chemotherapy and begin getting his affairs in order.

Unwilling to accept that as the end of his story, John was willing to go anywhere and try anything.

After meeting with Dr. Martin Dib, John learned something no one else had told him before: he still had an option. He was a candidate for a complex liver resection to remove the tumor, marking the first time this treatment would be performed in Boston.

Klatskin tumors are among the most complex and aggressive tumors involving the liver. Using a combination of advanced surgical oncology and transplant techniques, the BIDMC team successfully performed a resection that others believed could not be done.

What once felt like the end became the hope John never gave up on.

Following a 16-hour robotic surgery that removed a portion of his liver, the Klatskin tumor was successfully removed, and today, John remains cancer-free.

While up to 50% of Klatskin tumor resections can result in positive margins, John’s surgery achieved negative margins, a critical milestone in cancer surgery.

His journey is proof that distance does not have to be a barrier to life-saving care. Through coordinated care, trusted relationships, and open communication between providers across regions, lives can be saved from anywhere.
