At BMC, researchers are working to develop new ways to detect and monitor scleroderma earlier and more accurately.

Dr. Andreea Monica Bujor, rheumatologist at BMC, and her team are studying innovative imaging technology that can identify changes beneath the skin, even before they can be detected during a standard physical exam.

Together, these efforts reflect BMC’s commitment to advancing care, improving quality of life, and expanding treatment options for people living with scleroderma.

This Father’s Day, we're celebrating Stephen and Philip, a father-son duo here at BMC.

Stephen has served as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences for more than 17 years, leading efforts to advance patient care, research, and education. Philip first joined BMC as a summer intern in undergrad before returning in 2019. He now serves as Chief of Staff to the Chief Medical Officer, helping support key initiatives and hospital operations.

For Stephen, being a father has been one of life's greatest gifts. "Raising children is humbling but also hugely rewarding," he shares. "I'm proud of our kids and happy that I can be called their dad."

Philip credits his father for instilling the value of hard work and dedication. "My dad is highly driven in his work and many parts of life. I appreciate the example of a dedicated work ethic and the mentorship he's provided over the years."

Outside of work, the two enjoy spending time together over coffee, photography, travel, and family gatherings.

Thank you, Stephen and Philip, for the care, leadership, and commitment you bring to BMC and our community -- and Happy Father's Day to all fathers on our BMC team.

On June 19th 1865 - over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was declared - federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that all enslaved people were freed. Juneteenth honors the legal ending of slavery in the United States. ​

As part of our Juneteenth celebrations, our staff enjoyed a spoken word and musical performance on campus.

Mateo Turletti has been playing soccer for as long as he can remember. By 2025, he had earned a scholarship to play for and was preparing to begin his freshman year.

Just days before preseason, Mateo developed shortness of breath while traveling in Greece. “I’m pretty stubborn, so I just went with it,” he remembers. “And then one day, I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t breathe.” He flew home to Spain, where doctors discovered a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

Mateo learned he would need lifelong blood-thinning medication, meaning he could no longer play contact sports. At BU, head coach Kevin Nylen made it clear Mateo still had a place on the team, encouraging him to continue attending trainings and traveling with the squad.

As a BU Terrier, Mateo receives care from a specialized team at Boston Medical Center, including Dr. Amy Sobota, Dr. Elizabeth Klings, and Dr. Arturo Aguilar. Although returning to soccer seemed unlikely, Mateo continued asking whether there was a safe path back, and his doctors continued searching for one.

Eventually, the team identified a blood thinner, apixaban, that might allow him to play with careful timing and monitoring. After undergoing pharmacokinetic testing at BMC, his care team determined when medication levels in his blood were lowest and safest for sports participation.

Months later, Mateo was cleared to play. In April, he appeared in his first game as a Terrier.

“This Saturday I officially stepped on the field for a game again,” Mateo wrote afterward. “I felt like a five-year-old kid again and I will never forget that. I am so thankful...” His father, Pablo, shared a similar sentiment: “As a parent, the suffering and joys of our children get exponentially multiplied in our hearts. Seeing the joy you all brought to him this weekend, is a feeling beyond words.”

This spring, BMC Health System hosted the first annual "Lens on Discovery" photo contest, bringing together researchers and staff from across the system to celebrate the beauty and impact of scientific work.

Winners were selected across six categories, with entries ranging from glowing cells captured in motion under the microscope to striking visual metaphors that depict the real-time precision of cancer radiation therapy.

We’re kicking off summer with a special delivery! Last week, members from The Winter Walk presented Living Well at Home (LWAH), BMC’s housing program, with funds raised from Winter Walk.

Huge thanks to the more than 160 Team BMC walkers who supported the effort and to grateful patients Gary and Diane Glick, who made a generous matching gift. In total, $92,000 was raised for BMC’s Living Well at Home, which helps patients secure and maintain housing through search assistance, eviction prevention, behavioral health support, and more.

Congratulations to Healing Pup, Sara Goldfarb, and her companion, Deb Goldfarb, MSW, LICSW for being honored at Fenway Park last week!

The Healing Pups program at BMC offers patients and families a calming presence during challenging moments. All Healing Pups crew members have undergone rigorous training and behavioral evaluation to become certified therapy dogs.

At BMC's Grayken Center for Addiction, Deb works with people experiencing acute psychiatric crises, trauma, homelessness, and addiction. She is passionate about initiatives related to the criminalization of addiction and supporting people in the justice system.
