Happy Friday ✨ Our fourth ACT skill: Self-as-Context 👀

Self-as-Context is a reminder to detach yourself from your myriad of thoughts and emotions. We are observers of our thoughts, we are not the thoughts themselves.

Recognizing that we are not defined by our thoughts, emotions, or past experiences -but rather that we are the witnesses to those thoughts and can separate from them - gives us the freedom to change our own narratives and live life intentionally.

Happy Friday ✨ Our third ACT skill: Present Moment Awareness 🧘

Being present (or being mindful) sounds like such a simple concept, and by definition, it is. Doing it is a little trickier. We spend so much of our time thinking about what's ahead or what's behind us that it's easy to lose sight of what is right in front of us.

Sometimes that's for a good reason - the present moment can be quite jarring, uncertain, or even painful. Despite that, when we practice being with those thoughts, feelings, and the physical world around us, we can begin to change our perspective on them. Rather than feeling stuck in the past or swept away by the future, we can learn to ground ourselves right where we are, in the here and now.

Happy Friday ✨ Our second ACT skill: Cognitive Defusion!

Cognitive Defusion is a way to practice *separating* from our thoughts, rather than fusing with and being driven by them. When we're feeling anxious or down and those thoughts send you into that familiar negative spiral, we can learn to relate to them differently - not as facts, but as simple products of our mind. When we become aware of them and see them as they are (just thoughts!) we can separate them from our true selves, and be free to choose how we respond - even when our thoughts tell us differently!

Next skill drops next Friday. Stay tuned!

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or like things are out of your control, you’re not alone. Whether it’s the news, difficult life changes, burnout, chronic uncertainty, an unexpected loss, or all of the above, it makes sense that you’re feeling the way you do. While we might not always have control over everything, there are things we can do to make space for our emotions and live our lives with purpose, even when it feels hard.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented approach to dealing with hardships that can make us feel stuck, building “psychological flexibility” so we can stop avoiding, suppressing, or being controlled by how we feel and learn to do something different about it. Staying present and mindful, opening up to difficult thoughts and emotions, and committing to your personal values can help you learn to ride the waves of life; you might still be in a storm, but you’re no longer drowning.

Stay tuned for ACT skills to learn to stop avoiding pain and move toward what matters to you!
