What’s inside my CeraRoot Guided Surgery Kit? 👀

One of the things I really appreciate about the CeraRoot Guided Surgery Kit is how complete and ergonomic the system is.

It gives me options for both guided and freehand implant surgery in the same kit. 🦷

For guided surgery, I particularly like that I don’t need a separate guide key during the drilling sequence. The guiding component is incorporated into the drill system, so I’m not constantly adding and removing a separate key.

Inside the kit I have:

🦷 Drills for guided surgery
🦷 Drills for freehand surgery
🎯 Countersink
🔧 Wrench and other implant instrumentation
🪛 Drivers
💧 A small container where the drills can be soaked during the procedure to help keep them clean

And everything is organized together in one ergonomic surgical kit.

For me, one of its biggest advantages is having the flexibility to work guided or freehand depending on what the clinical situation requires.

When I am using the CeraRoot surgical guide, I can also keep the osteotomy guided throughout the drilling sequence rather than using the guide only for the initial drill. The countersink is then completed freehand.

Having good technology doesn’t replace clinical judgment. It gives me tools and flexibility to execute the surgical plan while adapting to what I find clinically.

Why am I putting ozone directly into the extraction socket? 👀

After removing a tooth, I don’t immediately move on to the next step.

In this case, after carefully cleaning and evaluating the extraction site, I’m applying ozone gas directly into the socket as an adjunctive step in my surgical protocol.

This patient was receiving a CeraRoot ceramic implant, so this was one of several steps I used while preparing the site before implant placement. 🦷

You may have already seen some of the other steps in this case: mechanical cleaning of the socket, ozonated water, and Fotona laser sweeps.

Each has its own place in the protocol, and the exact approach depends on the individual surgical site.

For me, removing the tooth is only the beginning. How we manage the socket afterward matters too. 🤍

The tooth is out… but what’s left inside the socket? 👀

For me, an extraction doesn’t end when the tooth comes out.

After the extraction, I carefully inspect and mechanically clean the socket walls, removing residual periodontal ligament and soft tissue when appropriate.

Why?

Because I want to thoroughly evaluate and prepare the surgical site before deciding on the next step.

In this case, I was preparing the extraction socket for placement of a CeraRoot ceramic implant. 🦷

After this mechanical cleaning, I also incorporated ozonated water and Fotona laser sweeps as part of my surgical protocol before moving forward with implant placement.

Each case is different, and whether an implant can be placed immediately depends on the clinical conditions of the site, including the remaining bone and the ability to achieve appropriate primary stability.

Removing the tooth is just one step.
How we manage the site afterward matters too. 🤍

What does your airway have to do with dentistry? 👀

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Liz Turner to Family Holistic Dentistry for a continuing-education session about airway health. 🥰

We talked about the importance of looking beyond the teeth and considering airway and oral function in both children and adults.

One of my favorite parts of today’s discussion was the importance of collaboration.

Airway concerns can involve much more than one provider. Depending on the individual patient, dentists may work alongside myofunctional therapists, ENTs, orthodontic providers, sleep professionals and other members of the healthcare team.

Our job isn’t to assume that every patient needs the same treatment. It’s to look, ask questions, recognize what may need further evaluation, and collaborate or refer when appropriate.

That’s one of the reasons continuing education is so important to us. The more we learn, the better questions we can ask and the better we can collaborate with the professionals around us to care for our patients. 🤍

Thank you, Dr. Liz Turner, for spending time with our team and sharing your knowledge today!

We love learning together. 🦷📚

Before I place a ceramic implant, I do this to the socket. 👀

Today I was replacing an extracted tooth with a CeraRoot ceramic implant, but removing the tooth is only one part of the procedure.

Before placing the implant, I carefully prepare the surgical site.

💧 I use ozonated water as an adjunct while irrigating and cleaning the extraction socket.

✨ I also incorporate Fotona LightWalker laser sweeps as part of my surgical protocol.

Then, once I’ve evaluated the site and confirmed that the clinical conditions are appropriate, I can move forward with placement of the CeraRoot ceramic implant.

For me, implant surgery isn’t simply about placing an implant. It’s about paying attention to the bone, the soft tissue, the surgical site, and all of the small steps along the way. 🤍

Why would I use a laser before taking a digital scan for a permanent crown? 👀

Because when we restore a tooth, I’m not only looking at the tooth. The surrounding gum tissue matters too.

In this case, I’m using our Fotona LightWalker laser to perform a conservative gingivectomy and carefully contour the tissue before capturing the digital scan for the final crown.

This can help me create better access and visibility around the restorative margin so we can capture the area clearly during the digital workflow.

And I don’t want to remove more tissue than necessary. The goal is to carefully manage the gum while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Then, once the tissue is ready, we can move forward with the digital scan used to design the permanent restoration. 🦷

It may look like one small step, but these are the details I’m thinking about before your final crown is even made.

🩸 Sometimes the smallest details can make a blood draw feel much easier.

We draw blood in our office to prepare PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), which we incorporate into many of our surgical procedures and into our SRP/deep-cleaning protocol.

And because we do blood draws regularly, I pay attention to the little things that can make the experience more comfortable.

🤍 First, I make sure the arm is comfortable and well supported.

🤍 I use a soft tourniquet that is gentler against the skin.

✊ I ask the patient to make a fist and turn it slightly toward the body. Then I palpate the vein — I don’t choose a vein simply because I can see it. I like to feel for one that is springy and appropriate for the draw.

💧 Hydration makes a difference. I usually encourage patients, when appropriate, to drink about 20 oz of water before the appointment so they arrive well hydrated.

🦋 And I like using a small butterfly needle for the blood draw.

Once the blood is collected, we process it to prepare PRF from the patient’s own blood.

We incorporate PRF into many of our surgical procedures, and in our office it is also part of the protocol we use with scaling and root planing (SRP/deep cleaning).

Whether we’re preparing for surgery or periodontal therapy, drawing the blood may be only one small part of the appointment — but I still want to make that part as comfortable as possible.

What makes a front implant look natural? It’s not just the tooth. 🦷

When an implant replaces a front tooth, I pay a lot of attention to the gum tissue surrounding the crown.

The goal is for the gum to frame the implant crown naturally and blend with the neighboring teeth.

That’s one reason we don’t always rush directly to the final zirconia crown.

We can first use a temporary PMMA crown to help gradually shape the gum tissue. Little by little, we can modify the contour of the temporary and allow the tissue to respond before designing the final crown.

Sometimes less is more. Rather than aggressively removing gum tissue, I prefer to preserve as much as possible and carefully guide its shape when the case allows.

Because with a front implant, replacing the tooth is only part of the job.

We want you to smile without thinking about which tooth is the implant. 🤍
