You’ve heard of anemia, but iron deficiency without anemia can present with similar symptoms or at the very least be a huge red flag that those symptoms are coming. Next time you’re getting blood work done, ask for a full iron panel including ferritin.
Ferritin is the storage form of iron and unfortunately, not enough practitioners assess it regularly. Even when they do, your lab results may say it’s “normal” even when you’d be better off with higher levels.
With a high activity level, symptoms of low ferritin may be more noticeable. Still, if you’ve unknowingly had low ferritin long term, you may not realize your energy levels could be significantly better.
On top of the groups mentioned at highest risk, it’s also high for chronic dieters or those having trouble keeping up with calorie needs for their activity level. Certain medications, like regular NSAID and PPI use can increase risk, too.
Stay tuned for part II on iron deficiency and ferritin where I’ll cover diet tips for intake and absorption plus the need to know on supplementing.
