On May 28, 2014, the world lost one of its most luminous voices when celebrated poet, author, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou passed away. Her departure left a profound void in the global literary community, but her words continue to echo through time, offering comfort, strength, and an unshakeable sense of human dignity. Best known for her groundbreaking 1969 autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou transformed American literature by courageously sharing the complexities, struggles, and triumphs of Black womanhood in America.
Before she became a globally revered literary icon, Angelou lived a remarkably multifaceted life as a dancer, singer, actress, and fierce warrior for justice. During the height of the civil rights movement, she worked closely with both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., serving as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Her poetic mastery was uniquely capable of capturing the collective resilience of a people, a gift she beautifully displayed when she read her poem On the Pulse of Morning at the 1993 presidential inauguration. Remembering Dr. Angelou on this anniversary is an invitation to reflect on her immense wisdom and to continue living by her famous reminder that people will never forget how you made them feel.

Hard lesson, good lesson

as white people, we were conditioned to see being called racist as worse than Black & Brown people experiencing racism, and that’s a HUGE part of why this system survives 👀

Remembering award winning children’s book author and pioneer Mildred Pitts Walker, who has passed away at age 104. 💕

“Her passion for children’s literature was born when she became a teacher at a predominately African American school in Los Angeles. Disheartened that the only book in the school library featuring an African American child was Ezra Jack Keats, “The Snowy Day”, she wrote the publisher out of sheer frustration, requesting that more books feature characters who looked like the students in her classroom. The publisher wrote back, “Write them”. And that she did.
Her first book, “Lillie of Watts”, was published in 1969. Eventually, she went on to write more than 20 others, including “Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World” (1986) for which she won The Coretta Scott King Award.” - Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators
