Dance To Be Free Dance To Be Free is changing the lives of incarcerated people through the healing power of dance!

Dance To Be Free’s mission is to radically improve the lives of incarcerated women through the healing power of cathartic dance. We launched our program at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility in 2015 and have since expanded to 17 prisons across the US. We offer live classes, DVDs of our filmed classes and a teacher training program. The regularity of the DVD program is critical in creating lasting change and will give us access to prisons that are in distant or rural areas. The teacher training program gives our students the opportunity to lead and inspire others while gaining a skill they can use during and after their sentence.

DTBF in Southern CO this week! 💛

Maria Cooper and Sheila Cataford are bringing Dance To Be Free to three communities through movement, creativity, and connection.

At La Vista Correctional Facility, 18 women joined a two-day training to create choreography, explore movement, journal, and share. We’re helping the dance leaders prepare to facilitate trainings themselves and continue sharing their choreography at Thursday night classes. Next workshop is November 28 to work on choreography, cueing, and leadership skills.

At Youthful Offender System (YOS), we’re slowly building trust with a small group of women who have limited access to programs. This visit included funny and inspiring dance videos, with choice at the heart of our approach: participate, observe, or take a break. Next time, we plan to bring women from La Vista to dance alongside them. 👯👯

Today, we’re with the men at The Beacon in Cañon City, whose enthusiasm and creativity always shine! Today’s workshop will help prepare them for a two-day training next month.

We drive home tonight and look forward to DanceFest tomorrow! See you on the dance floor! 💃✨

The radiant, soulful Misa will be teaching at the Avalon this Saturday at 11 AM! ✨💫✨

She’ll be in town to help facilitate our annual DanceFest fundraiser, and we’re so grateful to have her with us! Misa is truly one of a kind, creating a profound sanctuary where we can move, cleanse, shake, dance, and gather in healing community. 💜💛💜

Misa holds this transformative space in Asheville, North Carolina, with Misa June, and she also facilitates Dance To Be Free trainings in Tennessee.

Thank you, Misa, for all you give. We can’t wait to dance with you! 💜

The women at Nebraska Correctional Center for Women choreographed this heartfelt dance to **“Ordinary” by Alex Warren!** ❤️

This video captures them rehearsing their choreography before sharing it with the general population in the yard a couple of weeks ago, during a Dance To Be Free training led by Maria Cooper and Tessa Hale.

We also led a 30-minute dance class for the general population, and it went incredibly well! The women were nervous about sharing their dance, but they were met with so much encouragement and support from their peers gathered on the grass. It was a beautiful moment!

With the dedication and support of **Shar Most, Recreation Coordinator at NCCW**, Dance To Be Free hopes to establish a resident-led dance team with this passionate group of women.

We are so excited about what’s possible as we continue to grow this program! 💃❤️

Hi friends! 💛 Help us keep dancing in prisons!
Donate here: https://www.dancetobefree.org/donation

Our annual DanceFest is this weekend! I know many of you are away or live out of town, so we’re also holding a donation drive alongside the fundraiser and through the following week.

As many of you know, Dance To Be Free has become a huge part of my life. I get to witness what happens when people have space to move, express themselves, and support one another—and I want to keep making that possible.

We have incredible plans for the coming year, including:

✨ Two-day trainings and one-day workshops for the men at The Beacon in Cañon City.
✨ Eight dance leadership trainings for the women at La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo, CO.
✨ Visits to the Youthful Offender System in Pueblo one to two times per month.
✨ Trainings every four to six weeks for the women in Nebraska.
✨ Returning to Wyoming to bring programming back!
✨ Monthly visits and trainings in Tennessee by Misa Terral 💛

Our focus is to return often—to build relationships, deepen the work, and support participants in becoming leaders in their own communities. We’re also training more volunteers, including board members, to join us inside the prisons, and sharing this experience has been so meaningful.

We are busy, motivated, and ready to keep showing up. But we can only do this work with your support. Your donations help cover travel, training, and the materials that make these visits possible.

If you can’t join us at DanceFest, please consider giving. And whether or not you can donate, sharing this post helps us reach more people!

Thank you for supporting this work that means so much to me. I’m grateful and humbled by your generosity. ❤️
