You’ve tried therapy. Maybe your teen has too.
And something about it just hasn’t quite… landed.
That doesn’t mean therapy isn’t for you. It might just mean the modality isn’t right. Here are 5 signs that art therapy could be the missing piece:
1. They can explain their anxiety perfectly but nothing shifts.
The insight is there. The relief isn’t. That’s a sign the work is staying in the head and never reaching the body.
2. Sessions feel like performances, not breakthroughs.
If your teen leaves therapy feeling like they just said the right things rather than actually felt something that’s worth paying attention to.
3. They shut down, go quiet, or leave feeling worse.
This isn’t resistance. It’s the nervous system communicating that something about the format isn’t working.
4. Perfectionism or a fierce inner critic is running the show.
Talk therapy can accidentally reward the very intellectualisation that keeps high-achieving teens stuck. Art therapy interrupts it.
5. They struggle to connect words to what they actually feel.
Because some things were never stored in language to begin with.
If two or more of these feel familiar art therapy may be exactly the next step.
