Everyone assumes heartburn = too much stomach acid.
But for a huge percentage of people, the actual cause is the opposite — not enough acid. When acid is low, food sits too long, ferments, builds pressure, and pushes acid up through the LES valve.
That’s why antacids often make heartburn worse over time. You’re suppressing acid you already don’t have enough of.
Four options that work with your stomach instead of against it:
🔹 Apple cider vinegar — 1–2 tsp in water before meals.Provides mild acid pre-load.
🔹 Lemon juice — half a lemon in water before meals. Use a straw to protect enamel.
🔹 Baking soda — ½ tsp in ¼ cup water. Neutralizes acid for occasional fast relief. Not for daily use.
🔹 Betaine HCl — supplements the exact hydrochloric acid your stomach makes. A 2013 study found 1500mg dropped gastric pH within 6 minutes.
If antacids haven’t worked — it’s worth investigating whether your acid is too low, not too high.
