If you are a therapist of someone with OCD but you aren’t a specialist, please try to do this: •    help us realize that we will not be able to talk our way out of OCD
    •    refer us to resources on www.iocdf.org
    •    encourage us to find an OCD specialist
    •    help us feel less alone by connecting us to the incredible, welcoming OCD experiencer community

No, rumination is not just overthinking.
Rumination is darker, more extreme, more urgent, more addictive.

Here’s how to recognize the difference so that you can
stop the cycle:

Fear is just an emotion, and it will pass like all the other emotions. Do not let the fear control you, stop you, make you compulse. Believe in your ability to withstand it, until it passes.

Compliments are neurologically rewarding. If you got them genuinely and consistently as a child, it helped you develop a positive self-view.

When given well, and received well, compliments can help boost our self esteem.... except if OCD gets involved.

OCD is the doubting disorder. So from the moment that the compliment reaches our ears, OCD casts doubt on its validity.
Poll: Do you struggle to accept a compliment?

Rumination is NOT inevitable. Rumination is NOT uncontrollable. Rumination is a learned habit. You CAN break it with intention, with practice, with effort, with mindfulness. Your intrusive thoughts are unconscious and automatic, but your responses to these intrusive thoughts don’t have to be! You have taught yourself to go deep with your thoughts, and you can teach yourself to stop. Rumination habit is about fixing the situation, the emotions, your thoughts. I want you to accept not fix. If you are watching this video, you probably think that thinking about thinking is productive. It’s not. Thinking about thinking will not break you out of discomfort, quite the opposite. Choose to retrain your brain to notice thoughts and move on. Comment “Book” below and I will send you a free rumination guide, and excerpts of the book!

Today is a birthday that I actually am excited for — my book birthday. This workbook for Exposure Response Prevention, the gold standard for OCD treatment, is now out in stores and on Amazon. I will be kicking off a series introducing some of my favorite parts, activities for OCD healing that I use with my own clients in session. The first one I want to show you is the Exposure Gratitude Journal — it is an exercise that helps you express gratitude towards yourself for completing difficult exposures. This journaling practice is especially valuable if you are the kind of person who is dismissive of your ERP accomplishments — ie. “That’s not a big deal” “Why would I be proud of that”. I want us all to celebrate our incredible exposure feats — its can be really tough to complete an exposure, and we all deserve to commemorate these moments. And on that note, this book, perhaps, is my biggest exposure yet. I feel excited but also nervous, feeling exposed to judgement but also rejoicing that I am finally getting the private therapy that I do in this room out there in a more public way. Appreciate all your support immensely!

Perhaps these moments would not have been exposures for you, but for me, they touched on OCD obsessions (perfection, health, and harm) that do need constant maintenance.

It is much easier to leave OCD exposures to the therapy room, but truly, life gives you opportunities in spades to practice your skills.

This is why I see Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) as a lifestyle, a habit, a consistent life choice.

Please share below, how did you practice ERP this week?
