When I can't sleep, I ask what my body knows.

I lay there and remember: I belong to this creature I live in. I am her safe-keeper.

It's these middle-of-the-night brain tornadoes where I practice the mundane art of belonging to myself in the simplest way. Most of the time, I fall back asleep.

This is not dominion over my body -- my consciousness is not a dictatorship. I don't direct my body beyond her capacity or truth.

I feel the room, listen to the fan whirring. Feel the boundary of my skin and the warmth of my sweetheart beside me. I notice the weight of my body on the bed, feel where skin meets sheet.

What ask myself what it means to be sovereign in body.

Somatic: of the body.
Sovereignty: Absolute rule or authority.

The absolute rule or authority of the body.

But does this mean my body always knows or perceives correctly? No, sadly. Does it mean that my consciousness becomes the ruler of my body's experience? Also no. We are in relationship.

I don't shame or rush my body. I get up. I leave my lover sleeping and the fan whirring. I write.

If you refuse anything in this life, refuse to shame yourself. Refuse to shame your body for being an alive thing that changes, needs, processes and takes time to exist. Her laws are not the laws of men, of "productivity" or even circadian rhythms.

I put my hand over my aching belly and say, "I trust you. I believe you. I'm with you."

Sometimes, the wild wind of sensation I feel is soothing and lulls me back to sleep. Sometimes, like tonight, it's far too fascinating to lull me into anything but wonder.

When tomorrow is hard, or I'm slow because I didn't sleep, despite all I need to do, I will forgive myself easily. I will remember that the night needed me.

I'll put hand over heart and remember that I answered my body's prayer: I got up and wrote. It won't be like this every night. This prayer has been birthing through me all my life, maybe. I have never known how to trust myself life this, and here I am.

Dreaming in black and white. A mother, a child, a lover, a daughter. Mine.

One of my mentors said to me recently, "At some point, every business, relationship, creation of any kind has to move out of the body and into Spirit if it's going to survive, much less evolve."

As a somatic therapist and educator: can confirm.

The body is a vessel, a communicator, a compass, a powerful ally and guardian AND:

Your nervous system was initially wired according to who you needed to be (this means survival when you're very young), and how safe it was to explore, both your inner world and the larger world 'out there,' seek connection and also trust that space was safe.

We can unknowingly step onto an energetic hamster wheel that centers our survival, trauma, attachment and all the other buzzy maps and words when we identify with 'this is why I am how I am.'

In this limited range of self-relationship, we can begin to view healing not as communion with the force that is Life and Love moving through us, intelligently guiding us, calling us into more intimacy, deeper love and connection, greater trust, creativity, possibility — and communicating to us THROUGH OUR BODIES — but 'healing' as a series of never-ending warnings: who and what we need to stay away from to 'protect our energy' and 'set boundaries.'

The most well-boundaried people I know are also the kindest, softest, most empathetic, compassionate to their impact and in close, partnered relationship with themselves.

The more dense a body's energy is, the heavier trauma will feel, the more constriction will run the programming, impacting your beliefs around who you are and what you can have.

When you view yourself as fragile, your range of motion becomes incredibly limited. Everything seems scary, and you'll perceive threat where there is none. Distortion is a sneaky mo********er.

The gift of the body lies in its ENERGY.

As we learn to be in enthusiastic relationship with that energy, we move out of protection of our vessels and into communion.

You can learn to commune with the body as an antennae of sorts: the hardware through which you commune with the Divine.

From here, being alive is a very different experience.

To be embodied means we're engaged. We're intimate with our felt experience of the moment. And experience, rather than story, is what is guiding our movement, and our choice.

I listened to a talk with Emilie Conrad and .art.ig and Emilie beautifully noted that when we're not embodied, we'll naturally grab something to fill in the space of our felt experience: a story, a belief, a judgement, a fear.

There's something wise about that grab for something to fill in the gaps. I perceive this attempt as the natural movement toward wholeness or fullness, and where there are gaps — a sense of being displaced from ourselves, which is what occurs as the result of trauma — our bodies want to be reattached or reconnected.

But TO WHAT are we attempting to reconnect? This truly, deeply matters.

As such a displaced and disembodied culture and society, we're mostly trained to fill in the gaps with meaning-making. The newest part of our brain, the neocortex, is a meaning-making machine, after all; it attempts to organize our felt experience with literally anything it can get its paws on, and when our experiences are filled with disembodied narratives... well, good ol' neocortex will fill in the gaps with stories that hurt.

"Embodiment" is catchy right now, but to me it means this: We are actively engaged with, curious about and attentive to whatever is occurring in us as felt sensation and experience.

And to the women I work with, who want to love and be loved deeply, powerfully, openly: it's the practice of being close enough to touch the truth of their heart, and with as much embodied contact as possible & express that truth through their body.

The fullness of that love expressed ("love" = whatever is true and connected to the heart) becomes the gift of their bodies to their partners & the world.

Maybe it manifests the adoring partner, but that's not the prize. The "prize" is Heart's Truth being lived through the body, contact with Heart's Truth in any moment, and the reverberating YES of a body that has received itself fully, in deep trust and surrender.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I found photos one of my sisters sent of me as just a little thing. Round cheeks and blond eyelashes. That particular age a baby is so new, not all her colors have come in yet, and even when she's some months old, sitting up by herself in the bath and finding things funny — because sense of humor is a thing, even that young — she's so fresh and damp with new life it seems she could almost slip back into the womb unnoticed.

I'm the age a human is still just hints, shades of someone she'll someday become. The pictures made me cry. Maybe you know the feeling. Sometimes we grow up so quickly we end up tripping over our childhood sometime in adulthood, and go 'round sorting out what got dropped when and we have to learn to make our arms really big to hold all the innocence we contain for the first time.

Maybe you're 30-something when it happens, maybe you're 60, I don't know. What I know is some of us never got to be blissfully ignorant of how safe we were in the world when we were just babes, which is probably the only kind of ignorance that's needed and very, very healing — especially when you discover it in adulthood.

We can hold a lot of shame for not having had the kinds of childhoods that... I dunno, I guess some people had? I don't think I know any of those people very well, and when I come across them, there is a kind of slipperiness to them that I end up talking about with friends and clients, "Like, y'know, people who had nice childhoods?" and we look at each other like, "What's that like?" and hold hands across the gaps in our own that could have killed us, but didn't.

There is a real power there, in that hand-holding across time. A compassion. A look in the eye of someone who's suffered and doubled back to discover that maybe their childhood was fine, but inside of it, they were not. Something got missed, and that's all that matters: there is a heart that beats inside the missing person we are now realizing we must find inside ourselves.

What I mean is: I hope you are remembering that you can find innocence again. I hope there is space for you to do that, and people who will cherish that fresh life as it starts to gurgle to the surface of you.

Hear me: your desires are trustworthy.
Your body is trustworthy.
Your heart is a good and true guide.

You can be vicious, tender, wild, grieving, howling, laughing, loving. It's all just weather. Feel it all. Let it rain.

Your body can be soft, firm, lean, luscious, full, flat — it's yours to receive, cherish, affirm and adore.

There is a dark and heavy burden in the hearts and bodies of women who don't (yet) approve of themselves.

I want you to know that this lack of approval isn't innate to you — it was given to you by a culture of calculating, judging, measuring, comparing. It is the toxic creature that is the Male Gaze, which has become an entity unto itself. Even men are victims of it. It's in the nature of anything degenerative: it feeds on fear and shame, and leaves nothing and no one out.

You have to counteract it. Search for what was buried beneath it. Don't worry about being gentle; burn it to the ground.

Be dangerously approving of yourself.
Risk adoring your body, no matter what.
Saturate yourself in your desires.

Fan your own flame however you can, and believe yourself when you hear your needs speaking up from beneath the din "can't have" and "not enough."

Get to know your own touch as approving, validating, affirming and adoring. It's not a bypass — it's love.

Real love.

Love says, Here I am.
I am a worthy being.
This body is precious.
I get to love her.

Simple presence can be a container so wide, so deep in its capacity, that whatever circumventing we’re prone to can come, mercifully, to an end.

Maybe not without a fight — as our nervous systems seek to recalibrate by re-creating what’s familiar — and not immediately, but something rusty and clamoring can come to a stop when we just hold it: really hold it.

We stop chasing whatever it is away.
Stop explaining it.
Pathologizing it.
Shaming it and blaming it.
And just hold.
Steady.
Unwavering.
A witness.
A lover.
Redeemer.

I sat this morning with a question of intention: If, 6 months from now, you could look back and see yourself already in a process of receiving that which you truly, deeply long for (even if it seems impossible), what would occur in your body?

What relief?
What rectification?
What surrender, what softening?

My body broke completely open. A short burst of sobs rose up, and I was so amazed at how close to the surface desire is, even when I think I’m just coffee-ing it up on an otherwise inconspicuous morning.

And then it stopped, as quickly as it came, and there was me, robe-clad and with a little more space inside, all because the feelings came and I let them.

No stories. No judgements. Just a rare patch of earth inside me, in the shape of my own good heart, ready to receive me.

I remember waking up one morning above a creek. I laid withering plants to rest at the trunk of a tree there, and asked the earth to receive the dying parts of herself once more.

Yesterday, one of my clients was surprised when I told her that doing the deep work you're born to do can be incredibly painful. It's more than what I'd call "purpose," which is a powerful word, but doesn't tell the truth about what it means to reach for a world that doesn't always feel like it's reaching for you back. When what you do is a living reflection of who you are, and you are a woman whose gentleness and love are your offerings, you can be easily pulverized by this world that wants productivity more than it wants truth.

Deeply receiving ourselves isn't for the dainty; it's a battle cry, war paint smeared across the face, a thousand funerals of the woman you thought you were, but never intended to be.

There can be so much grief, your body thinks it will break — and it does, it has to.

But that doesn't mean it isn't beautiful. The sharp light of receiving ourselves pierces through the darkly-held secret hatreds against ourselves — and THAT is the pain we have been avoiding: the seeing of just how deeply and thoroughly pain teaches us to lock everything that moves within us down.

Women could write tomes about how pain lodged in their bodies became something they were trained to protect, and that protection became a prison. The woman who doesn't trust herself to feel — and doesn't have the tools she needs to feel safely in her body — is a frozen woman.

I've seen her. I've been her.

But we are all the earth beside that creek, on that morning, receiving the dying parts of ourselves again. The earth of us can thaw. We can become soft again, and yielding, and as we open, life springs up, rivers flow, we bear fruit.

We are breaking open into dawn.

When I woke up this morning, on my way to make the coffee, I passed the mirror and touched my belly. I noticed the line of muscle at the middle, where ribs meet (one of my favorite parts of my body). I touched the soft flesh around my belly button. I turned and admired the slope from my waist into hip.

I trust and love her (this body), and also: I don't love her perfectly. I'm sure that as time goes on and age settles into my body, I'll discover I was once younger and firmer in all kindsa places, and I'd love to adore my body into old age, and I'll sure try, but sometimes I'm sure it’ll be hard.

This is important: you do not have to love yourself or your body perfectly. There is no perfect love — not even of the Self.

It's powerful to remember that your body has carried you for this long. Your body has survived. And you won't ever be able to love your body perfectly, at all times, in all ways — and that's okay.

It's enough to love your body well enough sometimes.

There's a place for a conversation about training our bodies to be transmitters of love and consciousness, but this little note isn't that right now. It's just permission: to love yourself well enough — not perfectly, not transcendently, just enough, just right now.

Because sometimes good enough love is more than enough. Your good enough love might be actually really fu***ng amazing. I know mine is.

Going through some photos for .club I found this picture of and me and I remembered I don't practice embodiment and pleasure and active loving for the sake of perfection.

I do this work so I can receive myself deeply, so that people feel more free in my presence, and so when someone I love leans in to kiss me, I can lean back and let them.

I have space for 3 new clients. DMs are open, I'd love to meet you.
