Is your pharmacy out of estradiol patches?
Estradiol patches are currently in shortage. This can happen due to supply chain issues or a sudden increase in prescriptions. There are lots of options that we can consider either short-term or long-term to manage your menopausal hormone therapy during these times of shortage. The first 2 options you can try on your own. The other options require talking to your provider about changing your prescription.
Options for estradiol patch shortages:
1. Call some other pharmacies in your area. Can also try Cost Plus Drugs online and Costco online.
2. Change to different generic estradiol patches or to brand name patches. If your prescription was written as ‘substitution permitted’, the pharmacist has option to change to different generic brands and name brands (Climara, Vivelle-Dot, etc). Brand name may bemore expensive.
3. Change to a once-weekly patch
4. Change to another FDA-approved transdermal estradiol, like gel, spray or vaginal ring. The vaginal ring, Femring, is a systemic estradiol in a 3 month vaginal ring. Unfortunately, Femring can be $600+, but there is a savings card available on the Pfizer website.
5. Change to a combination Estrogen/Progestin patch. The combination patches only have progestins, not micronized progesterone.
6. Change to oral estradiol.
7. Change to a different dose of the estradiol patch. We could use 2 of the lower dose patches, or we could go to a patch that is double your usual dose and then cut the patches in half. Cutting patches is ok as long as the patch is the matrix type, not a reservoir type patch. Or we could just go to a slightly higher or lower dose patch and see how yoursymptoms do.
8. Consider a non-hormonal option for treatment of hot flushes.
9. if you are perimenopausal, switching to a low-dose oral contraceptive for hormone regulation.
